I like what you have in place so far.  I have a layout that is very similar to what you are working on.  A lot can be done in a door size layout in N scale.  Others here will certainly give you some good input.   Kirk

I don't know about adding an industry off of the interchange considering the lack of space, however, the runaround on it is a great idea that I definitely hadn't thought of.

Understand on the industry track off the interchange.

But it doesn't have to be the complete industry... What I mean is say it's a scrap yard– you just have a few piles of scrap nearby with the rest of the facility "off layout".  Same thing with an oil distribution facility– You have the unloading rack and one small storage tank nearby and the rest "off layout".

It could also just be a team track with a short off loading ramp. If I recall this was something common up on the ARR so you could load an unload flats.

So I didn't know exactly where to update this so I figure here would be good. While I was at Jerry's tonight (with help) I worked on my first AIR locos. They're SD35's. These are pics from what I've done prior to tonight:



Tonight I sprayed the black top on one of the bodies to see how I liked it:


I'm quite happy! Now I just need to order the decals!

I have never thought about using foam to hold shells while painting.... So thank you for that!

Though I think the loco could use some semi gloss... Will help the decals as well.

What I use is those cheap foam brushes you can get at just about any hardware store. They fit nicely in a GP SD shell and car body's I use a couple pieces of scrap cardboard to take up the space to make it fit snug. I even use them while decaling to hold them while they dry. One other thing I have is a piece of a 2x4 with a bunch of holes drilled that the handles of the brushes fit into nicely to let them dry.

n711: Yeah, Jerry and Pete taught me that. They will be getting the satin Scalecoat clear coat right after the decals are done. My ARR S2 was done the same way. I wonder if True Color has to be cleared before you can decal it...

c.v: I never thought of the brushes, I'm going to have to try that as the old film capsules are no longer available(they make a great base).

Nope. Just Scalecoat, AccuPaint and Tru Color paints have a semigloss finish ready for decaling.

I like the colors you chose. You should carry the black onto the top of the nose.
