Is that cars total sold, or new cars sold ?  Carter used new cars sold in his example.

I think this is where some of the statistics came from:  https://www.statista.com/statistics/199974/us-car-sales-since-1951/  I started this project a year or so ago, and I did not document where I got the data.

However, I have found some discrepancies between web sites, but I think the numbers should at least be in the ballpark.

I have no clue what I'm talking about, but this is consistent with what I hear on the radio and see on the Internet. Is that just hype? The headline talks about "new" cars...

I have a few "Road Apples/Lineside" cars but, it looks like Richard Plantz Hobbies is gone. The site has had an update message on it for about a year now:

I'd say that field is wide open. Could go for '55 to '59 Chevys, Pontiacs, Olds, Mercs, Fords, Buicks, Caddys, Lincolns, ALF fire engines - GMC rigs...you name it!

I am sure you are right because I was strictly searching for the number of new passenger automobiles sold by year in the US.  And, I had found another site that listed 7,689,000 as the US total new passenger car sales for 2014.

The whole purpose of the exercise was an attempt to derive a "formula" to calculate the appropriate percentages of cars by year for a layout.  All I have been able to come up with so far is that a trend exists starting in the 1950s that shows a decline in the percentage of "new" cars on the road as you move towards the 21st Century, along with the expected increase in the average age of the cars on the road as you move towards the 21st Century.

I am still hoping to come up with a formula or chart where you could plug in the year you model, and get a "readout" of how many cars by model year you should have on your layout.  But for now, all I have is a bunch of statistics.

And with this chart, depending on where one's layout setting is, affluence and area must be taken into account.  I.e. One might not see a Packard or Lincoln, where Chevys and Fords are the norm.
