"Something new" and a "road switcher" could very possibly be an SDP35. This is something they've already done in HO that would fit on an existing N chassis.

It may not solve a gap for many folks (tho' @davefoxx would be one), but I hope so. This is something in my project queue, but I haven't had the heart/guts yet to start cutting-up the SD35 shell(s) to do it.

Wouldn't that be a passenger diesel , though when any diesel is 10~+ years old it is in many cases reduced to lesser duties than first intended .

Technically a road switcher in body configuration. And freight is what UP used them for nearly right away, apparently "trying and not liking" for their idea of passenger service. L&N's were even delivered without steam generators according to the Wikipedia article, having ordered them from EMD and then being approved by regulators to cut a number of passenger trains. Seaboard seemed to be the only road successful with the model as designed.

I think I read that the L&N SDP35's were ordered with the idea of using the hood space for Locotrol equipment from the outset.

Here's a question- SAL seemed to like their SDP35's, but what did ACL think of their solo copy?

Enough that it was transferred to the L&N (remember, the ACL's holding company also controlled the L&N).   :P

Since they're making Z flex track, and presumably turnouts eventually, 3-rail N MIGHT mean dual gauge.  That could be interesting.
