Hi all,
A short update on my ATSF tankcar project.
Attached 5 pictures of the 4 classes and the underbody, now with all etchings in place.
Also some pictures of another project: Bx-3/6, original K brake, modified AB brake, ice car, zinc concentrate).
As usual in a one man operation everything takes more time than expected......
I am writing the building instructions right now and preparing the website.
I plan to go public if 4 or 5 different projects are ready.
1. the tank cars Tk-G. H, I and J
2. a boxcar project (Bx3/6, original, rebuild, ice car, zinc concentrate)
3. heavyweight coaches (roof, ends, underbody, integral pedestal trucks, Roberto Martari sides)
4, tenders (12000 gallon, 15000 gallon, 20000 gallon square, mallet square, turtleback)
5. RSD-15

Frame is FXD print, tank parts are resin castings of FXD prints/moulds.

Nice job Dirk! While I don't model ATSF, I like oddball cars so I'll probably pick up one of those tank cars.
I also like to mention that when you attach photos to your post, if you select "In-line full size image" instead of the default setting of "End-of-post expandable thumbnail", the images will show up full-size instead of having every person who views the post clicking on them to view them full size. That is one extra click for you but thousand less clicks for all the others who are looking at your post. That is one of those things that irks me. I asked
to make the full-size selection as default but he said that it was not something that can be easily done.

I might be able to justify one of the Bx-3/6 boxcars with AB brakes. I have to check the timeframe of operation for the prototype.

Hi Dirk.
You have an exciting bunch of projects coming up, and I'll be lining up for several of them.
I'm sure you're aware that the majority of Bx-3 and Bx-6 boxcars were converted to stock cars (Sk-2, -3 and -5) during the late '40s and early '50s. Is it possible that you might add stock cars to your list of projects?

Very excited about these but especially about the ATSF heavyweight cars you mentioned....I have plenty of Roberto Martari sides for these but am really interested in the other parts you mentioned...

Dirk, I was beginning to wonder what happened to this project.... Great to see progress on the tanks and new models dear to my heart! Bx-3's in variations, who would have thunk? Thank you!
I do have a question about the etched running boards, they have a bit of a bow at the ends....I assume that can be fixed? The tenders are also a very welcome addition, especially the 15K's which have been done in brass but are rarer than hens teeth. What are you planning to do for trucks and/or sideframes?
I'm very interested in all of these, keep the progress and pics coming!

The tank cars once more....

A total of 1848 of these cars (all 4 classes together) were built between 1906 and 1914.
The last of the Tk-G went off the active roster in the early 1950's.
Most of the Tk-H and I lasted to the early 1960's and the last H survived till 1985.
In the early 1980's there were still 150 on the active roster.
Quite a number were converted to MOW service (light gray before 1956 and aluminum after that date).
In MOW service some were still in us in the early 1990's.
And the boxcars.

Pictures are merciless and the bulge on the end of the roofwalk on the zinc concentrate version has been corrected....
These are the first 4 cars built and I discovered the short end sidewalks are too short. New etchings are on the way.
A total of 5000 cars were built. Most cars were converted to AB brake before 1950 (and received the Youngstown door).
Many were converted to stockcars in the 1940's and 1950's. Intermountain has produced these.
In 1951 45 cars were converted to salt cars (refrigerator doors) and lateron in 1958 to ice cars in MOW service.
Also in 1951 200 cars had their outside sheathing removed for zinc concentrate service (working in Texas and New Mexico).
Last cars off the active roster early 1970's. In MOW they lasted much longer.
Tender trucks.

The outside frames of the tender trucks for the 12000, 15000 and 20000 gallon versions are resin castings.
All-wheel current pickup by phosphor bronze inner frames (33 inch FVM wheels for the 12000 and 15000, 40 inch Kato wheels for the 20000).
The square mallet and turtleback tenders had passenger trucks so MTL fits the bill.
All-wheel current pickup through FVM 36 inch wheels - 1 inch short of the real thing - and phosphor bronze inner frames.
Unfortunately not the cheapest solution but it works fine: very free rolling and good current pickup.

will this be based off of an existing mechanism?
And a boxcar to toss into a steam era grain train.
For the tanks are they close to anything besides Santa Fe?
