Possible kitbash for MTL PS-1?

I would love to see a list of all the MT cars that are correctly proportioned(ride-height notwithstanding), vs those that are "proportionally challenged". This would be a huge help . For instance, how do the bulkhead flats or the centerbeam flats scale out?...I've noticed n scale has a deficit of older versions of 60 footers of both of these car types...

What would be best is an evaluation of all N scale cars ever made, but that would be a huge undertaking. It would certainly be a great addition to Spookshow's listings. Not that he should do the research, but if people sent in to him which cars were prototypically correct, he could add that fact to his reviews. This specific note would only be added to the prototype models. The foobies would not have anything added to their listings.

You will have to do the research.  I've only checked the models that are relevant to my railroad/region/era.  For example, I know the riveted mechanical reefer is correct because it is a Fruit Growers Express prototype and New Haven was a founding member for FGE. 

Check the models against mechanical drawings for the prototype, most of which can be found in the MR and RMC archives.  It takes some effort but not a super-human effort.  Or, search the Railwire and Atlas archives, as this isn't the first time this topic has been discussed.

Hi,

The ribbed mechanical reefers have one too many ribs to be used for PFE_R-70-11 and R-70-12 reefers. They are however very close for Santa Fe and Burlington.
Santa Fe classes RR-71 SFRC 1700-1874, and RR-72 SFRC_1875-1899 are almost correct. The 1700s have a 4 rod door, while the 1800s have the 2 rod door of the MTL model. Of course MTL decorated them as 1700s. The Burlington  BRMX 5100-5149 (meat rails), and BRCX 5150-5199, also need the 4 rod doors, but are otherwise correct for the ribbed sides.

The wide plug on the 21000 series can't be used as is for anything because it's too tall.  Unlike it's standard door counterparts, the lower door track is on the sill where it's supposed to be, but with the added height of the car, the door is too tall to use for anything (except an 11' IH car I suppose).  The 22000 (which is what I assume you mean) has a good donor door because it's a combination door and they used the (incorrect) higher door track.

I have a 22000 on my desk right now to try and convert the Atlas PS-1 into an NP combination door car using the MTL plug door.

edit: I'm using a 33000 series as a plug door donor which is the 50' combination door car.
