Neat. I occasionally saw these on TV trains, I think.

I should get an FEC one, right?

What would be the era for these trailers?  I was also wondering what would be the loads on these trailers other than lumber and metal products?  There will definitely be a future purchase for one or two of these trailers.

Thanks,
Adam

I can't find it in the brochure or on the web site so does anyone know which trailer manufacturer served as the prototype for this model and that information would determine the era.

UP fans should be happy...

Erie Lackawanna fans too...
http://hankstruckforum.com/htforum/index.php?PHPSESSID=o02jm11117k68es7mm0ijaefr2&topic=39373.0

Rio Grand fans should be exited to order the L&N Family Lines version...
http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=408717
or the entire set...
http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=553900
The Railblazer almost can't be modeled without flatbeds (or maybe James Belmont has just taken a lot of pictures of that train)...

This is likely a Railblazer pic too, although perhaps a different, later era prototype flatbed...

ATSF fans have a use for them too..
http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=395447

So do lumber haulers...

Ambitious modelers could add stakes...

(Okay, so who knows if all those pics show the Trainworx prototype, but good fodder for further discussion, I thought.)

I just ordered 6 of these, three of them will be hauling circus tent poles. The others are going to be lumber haulers.

These actually have a REALLY long life cycle. The basic shape - 40' flat with two axles and a fishbelly frame - has been in use since the 60's. Traditionally, older models would have a leaner frame and bulkhead. These were beefed up when gross tonnage gradually increased. Older flats would have ratcheting built into the flat side, while newer models would simply have a pocket or cutout where the self ratcheting strap would attach. Newest models have two cutouts in the rear for docking a spider. But all these details are very small and easily changed.

I will be getting an early paint because stripes were not required until 2000. I would love to add a Showcase spider, but I think those were not in use until the 2000's.

It looks like the FEC ones are still around, although I cannot tell if they are 40' or 48' :D
