I was originally thinking I only needed 2 Phase 2 units, but I might have to get a Phase 1 unit.

Hah, I've got 2 phase 1's reserved and now I'm thinking I should get a phase 2.

@Ed Kapuscinski,

Hold out for Phase III paint. Internet research found that twenty-one SDP40Fs were shopped in 1980 and were given major overhauls that included pass-through HEP cables and Phase III paint.  It would be much more plausible to see these in 1985 than SDP40Fs in Phase I paint.

I won't have an issue using SDP40Fs as a substitute for the unavailable P30CH in N scale.  In fact, I'd only be cheating a year or two to have them survive into my era of 1983-86.  Some were assigned to the Hialeah pool on the SCL and were seen on the Florida trains, including the AutoTrain and the Silver Service trains.  I understand that a few were based out of Harrisburg, if that helps you alter your timeline.

Hmmm... I'm sure that Kato having the correct mechanism and trucks for this loco made it plausible for them to make these models.  Doesn't Kato also already have the right mechanism and trucks which could be stuffed into a P30CH shell?  :D  I know, wishful thinking....

Yeah, probably wishful thinking, since there were only twenty-five P30CHs, and Amtrak operated them for less than eighteen years.  They're all scrapped, and there was no reincarnation like the SDP40FS got on the AT&SF.  But, I wouldn't mind if Kato proved me wrong.

I have no need for the P30CH, don't remember ever seeing one, and, as far as I know, they never ran on the Empire Builder.  But, if there's a correct mechanism, how hard would it be to 3D print one?  A relatively simple job, or are there features that would make it difficult?

The Pooch's were regular power for The Sunset Limited...
I'd certainly consider 2 of these if released by Kato

on another note...would LOVE to see E3/6s and E7s from Kato!

E3/6 & E7's from Kato would rock!  They would sell a boat load!

By the way, my searching around the net has led me to believe that all of the first 40 Phase 1 SDP40F's got overhauled at Paducah in the 1976-77 time frame and that was when they got phase 2 paint. So I'm not sure you could run any of this group of SDP40F's in phase 1 and 2 paint at the same time except for a very short window in 1976-77.

I think the phase 2 carbody units were phase 1 paint until the end unless they were part of the 21 that got the phase 3 scheme.

Saw the painter pretty production unit this weekend at the High Wheeler show.

I'm trying desperately to stay away as it's out of my era, but its typical Kato. Really nicely done.

Gonna need to paint up some Phase I coaches I think.  Anyone have a formula for mixing TruColor paint to match Kato's version of Platinum Mist?

Oh yeah, Phase 3 would be nice, and plausible.

But the Phase 1 one  would be great for the PC era...
