It was a good week for modelling.... the Prairie Shadows special run CN F unit was finished detailing and weathering....

I added numerous grabs and ladder rungs, three chime horn, sinclair, roof mounted bell, MU's, roof mounted cooling coils, winterization hatch and rear ladder to the unit per proto photo's found on line. I also cut the side skirt back as CN did when it was rebuilt. The unit was weathered for freight service.

Another Geoff Gooderham slab side hopper was built, painted and decalled - it too was weathered according to photo's

After weathering...

I have two more hoppers ready for decals, one for the TH&B and one for the PGE.
Model railroading isn't saving my life, but it's providing me moments of joy not normally associated with my current situation..... Train are good!

Those enterprising Pollacks!  I think that NYC uses a similar contraption.  That engine should provide enough trust to make it into a self-propelled snow melter.   8)  But I bet the gas kerosene mileage is really poor (especially if they fire up the afterburner!  :D

As far as model railroading goes, I'm working on the Arnold SW1 review for the NTRAK newsletter.

The Queen Mary is finally complete.

Josh Surkosky

Here's a Clerihew about Ed. K.

Ed Kapucinski
Every night, he plants a new tree.
But mention his law
and you've pulled your last straw!

Alternate version:
Ed Kapucinski
Every night, he plants a new tree.
He asks excitedly "Did you say Ménage à Trois?"
No, I said "Ed's Law."

Well done, Mike.  Superb work, as usual.  I particularly like the salute to that wonderful Canadian group, "The Irish Rovers"!!

Cheers

Peteski:  The story I read, and I won't swear to the accuracy of the source. is that the NYC did try this in a yard.  Buffalo, maybe?  It not only blew the ballast from between the ties, but also blew the points and tiebars out of the switches.  They eventually gave up...

Whether they used the same engines on their jet-powered RDC I don't know, but it wouldn't be surprising.

Thanks Greg, nice catch!; a couple of the Rovers are personal friends of mine from my days living in Richmond BC. Got to know Joe quite well. His son Ian, who's in the band in his place now and I shared a condo for two years. Just saw their farewell tour in Peterborough last week and got a chance to spend some time with them.... and, in the words of a true Rover... "wasn't that a party..."

The jet-powered snow melter is by no means consigned to the dust-heap of ideas.   During the NS Steam Program Buffalo-Corning excursion this August, we detrained at the end of the day and walked right by this unit parked at the intermodal transfer yard.

Sure looks like an aircraft jet engine to me.

Not sure if this is independent contractor-owned or not, but you know me, I love critters, so I photographed it from all four sides.

You could, of course, change this to N scale and use it as a vacuum.....

Somewhere out there in YouTube world there is a video do the Canadian Pacific jet powered snow melter being used to melt snow off the front of a snowplow. If I remember correctly, this operation takes about 40 minutes to complete. I can't help but think the amount of fuel used to run that thing at full throttle for 40 minutes amounts to e very expensive snowplow cleanup.
