As cool and correct as she generally is, if anything the blackish blob is too transparent. The photo shows it fairly opaque.

Don't worry, didn't like it so stripped it.  Will try again.  That's the best part of the acrylic wash/Dullcote method...it's reversible!

I'm doing this:

I plan to do a light spray of Vallejo Rust on everything. Then do some black and brown washes. I don't see a lot of streaks on this car so I'll have to be careful with how I remove the paint. I'm not sure what those dark spots are. Is it rust? Not sure how to approach that. Suggestions?

The rust will turn the hopper red color into an orange- is that correct for a hopper that would be dusty with coal? Can anyone get this man a color photo!?

Those marks on the side are rusty areas as a result of damaged paint.

Those dark areas on the side could also be accumulated dirt around bulges.

To do this:



The wash did not entirely come out right, so I'm going to redo that.  Also added uncoupling levers and air hoses.  More to come.

Looks like most everyone procrastinated..

The ones made from Jim Hediger's...eh never mind.
Here's some weathering.

I did a fade with Vallejo Rust first. Then I did black and burnt sienna washes. I wiped a lot of that away and got this.


I did an overspray of Roof Brown to even out this tart.





I probably could have used salt masks at this step.


I think I have my "base." Tomorrow I'll start spotting things up.

I never know what do do with the lettering. I'm pretty sure it's all or none for me. It's been tough for me to not weather just the lettering. Should I just use a tooth pick and 90% iso?

@tom mann can you please explain. Does not dirt accumulate and streaks run on the lettering as well? Or why should he clean it? I do not say you are wrong, far from it, I just want to know since this is something I have never thought of my self.
