I just think the video (wobbly driver notwithstanding) didn't seem too terrible, so with 6 "good" drivers, it might be ok.

I'm hoping for the best here, because my Bachmann Consols are REALLY good models...

And now for a dose of reality.

Look at that boiler shell, Verne, there's a lot of paint on it.  Not a lot of detail on it, either.
Does have traction tires on the #2 drivers, though.




Now, let's check the slow speed performance.  Does not look too good.  Pretty "jerky".
Possibly not enough break-in.
Run the loco for another hour, fiddle with the valve gear, maybe loosen it up a bit.
Now check the slow speed again.  Run at speed step 1 of 128.

Well, Verne, this one's going to be a shelf queen for some time.  Maybe a long time.

Was she worth $250?  You decide.

From a detail perspective other than the sand dome, does the model not compare well with this?:

I'm not a Pennsy nut or even know much about them but the one thing I was noticing in comparing the model to the 1361 is the headlight and generator position. Did a quick search and found a shot of the 1361 on the http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/prr/prr-s1361ahn.jpg site back in 1936 and it was just as the Bachmann model has it. So when did it get changed and was this done only on the 1361 or did others get this treatment?

For the non-SPF, that switch is known as "beautification". Originally the generator was behind the headlamp and the pilot was slat. Around WWII (I'll leave it to the truly hardcore SPFs to nail down an exact year) the Pennsy realized that the generator needed better access for maintenance, and the slat pilot wasn't strong enough. The slat pilot was replaced with a drop-coupler cast iron pilot, and the headlamp and generator positions were swapped. The resulting configuration is generally accepted to be (to put it politely) somewhat less aesthetically appealing, hence, "beautification". The K4 was not the only class to receive such treatment. Most steam engines were beautified.

One of the benefits of modeling an alternate history: My PRR favors aesthetics.

I notice on tender exploded view, there is mention of rear light on wiring diagram. But did the K4's have them? I did find one rear view on FF, looks like there is none?

I think it really depended on the tender and other things. Was there a hard and fast rule?

So, how did the "lollipop" thing come to be?
