FUD is cured with UV light. I don't expect it to deteriorate very rapidly under UV light but I do paint all sides whenever I can just to be sure.
Painting the inside of an item also helps with the coverage of the paint on the outside. If you miss a spot it won't really stand out because the translucent material will show the paint layer on the inside.

I have now seen several people mention a four to five year life for 3D printed items, and was curious as to whether this is true.  If it is, I'd rather not see my models crumble to dust after such a short span.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Hmmm, FUD for thought :D
