Latest Athearn 57' reefers - cushion underframe?

If the pic is accurate, it appears that Athearn upgraded these with body mounts and a cushion underframe:

Anyone seen these in person?

That looks nice, but an extended draft gear does not a cushioned under-frame make.  :P

Yeah I know, it's just the first image that came to mind was the pathetic stamped metal under frame on the 50' PS-1's that are supposed to have cushioned frames as well.

I actually don't own any of the reefers, do they have any sort of under frame to speak of?

I might pick up one of the FGEX - if I do, I'll post pics.

I have 7 on order. They were very common up here.

Athearn had samples in Springfield, and I do believe they have cushioning detail.

The PS1 cars are older MDC tooling... that's why they lack underframe detail.

I don't know what you mean by 'upgraded'.  This is new tooling.  It's not the same prototype as the old MDC 57' reefer.  (Unfortunately, though, their website does not make the distinction explicit.  You have to look at pictures and artwork and read between the lines.)

Well that makes some sense as I couldn't find any pictures of cars that looked like the one in the link.

That could be a problem for me, as I was planning on using them with the old MDC cars.

New tooling.  FGE prototype if I remember correctly, albeit from 1970.  I have three coming for my Conrail era.

These do look nice; based on some quick looking, the ATSF cars appear to be foobs (differences in roof length).

But I have pre-ordered two of the EL cars  8)

A few quick pix:

Paint is on the thick side, nice lettering.

Can't comment on ride height yet as I have not set it on track yet.

Great to see new releases with "extended draft gear" ... (take note manufacturers!) 8)
