They seem to have worked better as freight locomotives than passenger.  Was yours the original single-cab version built for the Black Mesa line, or one of Amtrak's dual-cab passenger versions?

As an SP man, my last guess is an SDP45. Along with the locomotives possibly a Sunset Limited consist. If so, I'll have to get a job.

Johnb:  I liked those single-cab E60s.  Too bad the Milwaukee didn't modernize their electrification.

Sirenwerks:  Yes, the original Kato EB sets were UP prototypes, and I have one, but lately they've done passenger trains with proper cars, so one can hope for a true Empire Builder.  I have at least one of every EB car ConCor made, although their diner and Pullman weren't up to the original Sekisui/Kato standards.  Those are still the only smoothside Budd dome cars available.  Some of the newer Kato cars are usable for the GN, as they bought secondhand cars in the 60s, so the EB set is of some use.

No one knows, this is all blind speculation. Kato has not said a thing yet.

So theres still a chance it could be another new steamer, or possible a Kato K4? (would be strange if both companies unknowingly decided K4 near the same time. )

According to Murphey's Law, that's the most likely scenario.

Something like this?

I wonder if they announce the model this week at the NMRA?

Th result of this thought is no one pre orders or buys the K4 from Bachmann, the loco flops after years and years of SPFs begging for a shiny new K4, and the resulting rumor spread through the Model Railroad Company Executive Lounge at the airports (carved into the walls) is that steam and Pennsy locos won't sell and all manufacturers should give up producing them and never think the thought again.

I pray that clash doesnt happen. Hope the Kato mystery is a USA heavy 4-6-2, or heavy 2-10-2.

Are we really absolutely sure that the new and exciting Kato loco is not just the ACS-64 (and Amfleet Phase I cars) which was announced earlier this year?  I seem to recall this being pondered earlier in the thread but I'm not about to read through 17 pages to find that post.  If it really is yet another newly-tooled loco then I'm surprised that Kato will produce 2 all new locomotives in a single year.

The ACS-64 was already announced before the email in the OP went out, they'd have named it as such if it was what they're talking about.
