I've been working on the Southern Pacific ferries Solano and Contra Costa in both N and Z since January or so. These were 423' and 433' long respectively, and 117' wide--the heaviest (not longest) wooden hulls ships ever. Got a few pipes to straighten up with the guys wire, some retouching, and then details and the railings and stairways.



This thing is the size of a small WWII escort carrier! This is the Z version; the N version is 32.5" long.

48, plus engine. And probably caboose. It was designed for an entire train of its time.

Sorry, a few less than that. 40 cars, if my math is more correct than the Engineering Record of 1896, which toured the boat and wrote 48 cars.

There's at least 1600 feet of track on the ferry, perhaps up to 1650.

Just simple machines for basic mechanical concepts and experience animation in Solidworks. I also have a Geneva Mechanism on my page, and I plan to upload a few more basic mechanical motions.

Or, I'm just showing the basic motion of sex toys...

That's why my GTO never felt right ... dealer said it as perfect !

Or maybe they didn't get the Hurst shifter correctly installed. Guess I'll never know.

This weeks projects were for my soon to be 3 year old grandson Cooper.
He told his mom he wanted a orange and black train for his birthday. (Thats his way of saying BNSF)
So his mom got me one of his wooden locos and I ran it thru the paint and decal shop.


Then he told me he wanted a ding-ding for his birthday. (Thats what he calls a crossing gate)
Little did he know his grandpa would go overboard and make him a 4 foot tall working one.
Complete with flashing lights and sound!
I made it so when he lowers the gate the lights and sound come on.


Sure has been a fun week and look forward to tomorrow to see Cooper's eyes when he opens these up!
Grandkids are so much FUN.

Pete, I suspect the typical car length of 1896 was more like 36', so perhaps 48 cars would have been possible....?

1600/36=44.4

44 cars will fit on the 1600 feet of track. If it's 1650 feet instead that gives you space for one more car. 46 cars is possible with 1656 feet.
Assuming it's just one track, which it obviously isn't.

I did do the math for 36' cars. The Solano was 423' overall. but that includes the docking aprons.
