Correct Ed. Unit train service by the 80's was gone, but still showed up in smaller cuts, mainly by small elevators with specialty grains or customers.

MT and Walthers both.   The Walthers version wasn't terrible, they just quit making them.  And the MTL is a really nice car...I've bought every one that is remotely legit for my era/locale.   But same deal....you snooze you lose.   I love Trainworx stuff so I couldn't be happier about this announcement.

Has Walthers ever done a second release on any N freight car? I liked the Walthers car, less detail than the Exactrail for sure, but then my layout isn't museum quality either.

Trainworx does make nice stuff, and they are a 1970's modelers dream.

Walthers eventually did a second run of their Thrall well cars.  I think it was about 15 years between runs. 

With respect to previous comments in this thread..

I completely agree that Pat at Trainworx seems to have it down.  He makes an announcement, the stuff usually arrives within a few months, and then soon enough he announces a new run.  With some exceptions it seems like the stuff sells, too.  Gotta wonder why more companies can't emulate.

I see the physical difference: the high side cars have much higher "hips", where you can see the center sill and more of the actual hoppers, while the low sides have a more traditional looking side sill.

Lets not forget the different rib spacing - the wider panels and the resulting 4-3-4 rib spacing is pretty iconic.....

Walther's has done multiple runs of several cars. They just don't have the commitment on follow up with regard to freight cars. I don't really expect them to do much more in that area. They will probably have more loco run's of the same tooling and you can expect some new or re-purposed structures.

Trainworx models are very nice. Their Gon's and love their pig flats.

  Bethlehem built  Full Sided 4462s that were virtual Clones of the
  P-S Full Side 4427s,EL and LV had them,not sure of others ?
  so a model of the P-S car is very usable as a Beth Car.
   AC&Y,IC,and a couple of others had Full Sided 4427s with Round
  30" Hatches,usually 10,and center mounted single roof walks.
   a nice variant to consider modeling.
   USLX built kits supplied by P-S of the Short Side 4427s,Proto
  has done a few of these on their HO model.
     Mainline had nice pics of both versions of the 4427s.
   RMJ also had some articles on the cars.
  in late 71 or early 72,P-S replaced both the 4427CD,and 4740CD
  with the P-S 4750CD that went on to become their best selling
  Covered Hopper .

I think you got more road names from MTL than Exactrail put out for the low side car.
