I bought a pack of .020" music wire today from Hobby Lobby. I snipped the long wires into posts, sunk them into a scrap piece of foam, and painted them with a rail tie brown paint pen.

I'm pretty well satisfied with the look. And they'll be sturdy when pressed/sunk into not just extruded foam, but also solid plaster materials.

They should be.  Spring steel (especially in short lengths)  is quite stiff, and very tough.  It will hurt your skin before it bends.  :)  Music wire is a bit of an overkill.  Straight (sewing) pins, which I mentioned earlier,  would work just as well for this purpose (they are usually steel), and they have the added benefit of having a pointed end (which makes them ever easier to install).

@peteski - I'm sure you're right about the music wire being overkill. But they worked well. And this reiterates the conclusion of this thread: there are maybe dozens of materials that would work fine for pasture fence posts :)

Anyhow, I sunk the first section of fencing on Friday night, then went out of town camping for the weekend. I spaced these posts at 20' apart, but after a weekend driving through Napa-Sonoma countryside, and observing fence after fence, I quickly realized that pasture fencing has post-spacing typically more like 7-10'. So I'm just going to add extra posts to make for 10' spacing.

Noah,
Are sure that the fences you saw we're really 10 feet post to post? I find it really hard to judge distances like that whizzing by in a car. what you posted in your pic looks right to me.

@ryan_wilkerson - thanks man. Any plans for the upcoming N-Scale convention?  Do you know if there are going be many actual home layout tours?  I am not aware of anyone in Sacramento who actually has a large home N-Scale layout.

@Philip H - Oh yeah, I annoyed my wife a couple times by pulling over and measuring the post spacing. 8-10 feet really seemed like the average.

@Noah Lane - The layout planning is in full swing for the NSE show in Sacramento this June. Should be a fun time. I haven't looked into the layout tours but what they have are listed on the NSE website, check it out: https://www.nationalnscaleconvention.com/Sacromento/Home_Layouts.html

Do you think you'll be able to attend?

Ryan, I definitely plan on going. I mean, it's pretty awesome that the National N-Scale convention is going to be 10 minutes from my house. What kind of N-Scaler would I be if I didn't go?!  :ashat:

And Mitch Valder's Northwestern Pacific layout sounds likes one we don't want to miss!
