Thinking about dismantling the NCR Shelf

I want to try and make some progress on the next phase of my York Yard layout. That has opened the question about how I'm going to handle the fact that the next phase is going to be below my existing NCR shelf layout.

It'd project above the new layout, and generally just get in the way. It's not designed to be able to hang lights off of, so lighting the lower layout will be tough, and once the lower layout is in place, it'll be rather tough to get to.

I think I may just say screw it, and take it down.

It's been a fun evolutionary step, and I've learned a lot from its "avant garde" construction style, but I think it may be time for it to go.

I might convert the sceniced portions to OneTRAK modules, and will recycle the staging tracks.

I wanted to post about it and see what your collective thoughts were.

Make the scenic portions a OneTrak set of modules. It looks like it's done what you wanted it to do and if you think it's going to really hinder working on the York layout there, then remove it and repurpose parts of it,

Well, after all the cr@p we've given you about it . . . I'd say take ahead gun to it as a YouTube video.  Sort of a foam oriented take on the blender approach.

I would salvage every last thing I could (i.e., trees, details, switch throws, etc.) and scrap the rest.  I'm guessing you won't get any of the track back if it's grouted in place.

However, you may want to reproduce some of those scenes on your new extension.

There's definitely a > 4' section that can be saved, including trees, etc... I might even do the whole length of the straight center part. I'm really happy with the scenery that I finished there, and wouldn't want to lose it all.

Much of the rest of the track was liquid nailsed down, but I can probably save most of it.

I think I'm going to take a bunch of photos of it all, write up a big post-mortem on my site, and schedule the rest for demolition.

If you go this route, just don't roast marshmallows over it.  That foam is NASTY.

? - If it will even burn. Pink/blue/purple foam has fire suppressants in it and will self-extinguish. You can make it "burn", but only with something having its own fuel source, like a propane torch. But, agreed, the fumes when you do that are nasty nasty NASTY.

Ed, two things.  When I hear "avant garde" I think of John Coltrane or Ornette Coleman's experimental 1960's albums.  I don't visualize foam on shelf brackets :P  Two:  don't trash it, bring it to the CRHS BBQ and raffle it off.

We were thinking of how to have fun since we don't have a porch to drink on. Hmm... Lol.

You could cruise the side streets of Columbia across the river...  There are some fine BBWs for rent.

If you really want to destroy it Newport fashion you need an AR 15.

For crying out loud, just don't do any cooking over it at the BBQ.
