Excellent guys! Thanks! I just thought that photos would have been posted along with the posts going into details of what is going on. Good to know that the photos are forthcoming.
This has been very interesting so far !! I got mine about 2 weeks ago and it probably has 20 hours of run time on it now . From the start I could tell it wasn't perfect , but not nearly as bad as it appears that some of them are . It ran OK in forward with just a slight hitch in the first few speed steps . Reverse was Quite obviously worse though . The CV tweaks that JD documented really helped smooth it out , although reverse still wasn't great . Just today I redid the CV's to his revised suggestion and it really is running much better now . I can tell that something still is off with the quartering as the rear siderod is just a bit off of being completely straight . I did try to adjust the quartering , but the drivers on mine seem to be mounted pretty solidly so I didn't force them . I thought of removing the idle gear , but really don't want to get into disassembling this unless I really have to . For now , I think I'll leave it alone and just run it . It will be interesting to see the pictures of your progress ! The CV's I used are CV209 = 230 CV210 = 30 CV212 = 150 CV213 = 2 CV214 = 3
Yes that's a whole lot more work than I'm willing to attempt ! Although I wonder if you could just remove the bottom plate and snip the post that the gear rides on ? Drilling and pinning the rods is probably above my pay grade here too lol . Keep the ideas coming ! Without yourself and a few others here I would not have had the inspiration to tune and repair some of the not so good steamers I sometimes find .
I hope that is not where we are headed: poorly built mechanisms with cheap motors, made to run well by theelectronic monitoring of a decoder.
Max, I was just giving you some old-fashioned ribbin' I'm sure that the photos and the writeup will be excellent and informative.
I find it interesting (and sad) that it seems the best option for an N scale Bershire is still the one from the late '60's...Mark in Oregon
Hi Max,do you know the Rowa berk has a 5 pole motor in it?the RR version has the RR motor.the Rowa suffers from pick-up issues mostlyand.... I guess the plastic side-rods which seem to self destruct on the odd occasiontough call... good looks or runability...victor
