How do I weather this?

I have an Atlas SD26 that's nice and clean and looks like this:


I'd rather have it look like this:



Can I do this without painting it from a bare shell?

It would be easier to start with a Santa Fe shell and Springfield Terminal decals, weathering it in the same order like the real thing weathered.  The ST paint can be partially scrubbed off as it dries.  I would also use a salt and hairspray mask for the frame and cab.

Thanks Tom, I was afraid that was the solution. I may renumber the one I have and keep an eye out for a Santa Fe one.

Cheap/bad paint is the usual explanation given, as opposed to badly applied paint. Apparently the D&H painted locomotives were the worst.

Hairspray masking is what a lot of military modelers do to replicate rusty scratches in metal. It is used in the same way as a salt mask, and provides for a "unstable" surface that permits the top coat to be scratched off.
