Weekend Update 2/22/15

Sent this to Shapeways today, 16-up on a sprue:



I don't expect manual file checking for a few days, but it passed the automatic checks for FUD. Fingers crossed.

It's intended to model the switchstand lanterns UP used up through about the '70s. Mounting hole in the bottom is sized for Ngineering 0.018" tubing, which will pass a .010" fiber for illumination.

Funny the things one can get done when the weather really sucks and one can't work on the layout building.

After a brief absence from the layout due to school and work requirements I was finally able to get some modeling done over the last few weeks. Although not entirely complete, (needs some more underbrush, trees and weathering applied to the bridge) I have basically finished my depiction of the Pine River Glulam bridge at Mile 601 of the Chetwynd Sub. As some of you may recall Doug Davis aka (BCR 751) constructed the same bridge for his layout several months back. Because of space mine has been slightly compressed but I think it gives the overall impression.







As always there is some fine work here this week!

Started transferring trackplan to benchwork.  Figured I'd start with the paper mill as I could get track down and run some switching jobs to check everything out.

Apparently, plugging in my Zephyr caused a time warp when I started my switching duties.  Here Gettysburg #105 and #107 are seen setting some empty boxcars into the enclosed loading dock, and then dropping off some coal loads at the power plant.  Notice the heavy Western Maryland influence.

I also got an email from LHS with flyer for new Intermountain FP7/9's due in the fall.  Most times, this would get deleted but one locomotive scheme has my interest if it gets done.  Algoma Central #1755 is now PREX #1755 and is currently stationed in Gettysburg, and runs with #107.

More Midland fun...

We salvaged the 2.5' x 5' benchwork from the old Apex layout:



I painted the underside with the dirt color we'll be using.  Why?  Because it was painted in the old tan color we'd used for Apex and had gotten a little beat up, so I like starting with a clean slate.  The color is Afternoon Tea by Glidden.  It seems to have just the right amount of red without being too red.  It's a dead match for the rock colors near Buena Vista.



Next up I laminated 5" worth of extruded Styromfoam to the table using Loctite PL300 foamboard glue.  This raises the base 5" above the tabletop. The mainline will sit 1/2" above that, with the branchline climbing to 2.5" above the top of the foam here for a total of 7.5" above the table top (which will be the lowest river level).



Lastly, here I'm weighting down the foam to make sure it laminates completely.  My Model Railroader collection is good for more than just inspiration!  The stack of Rio Grande Southern books and the full paint can indicate a particularly stubborn corner.



The cheap Costco folding table in the background is the rest of the benchwork.

Free-MoNebraska rocked day one of the Lincoln Annual Train Show.



Even unfinished, the "cotton candy mountains" were a huge hit!  Operating and watching trains on this module is incredibly fun!  Hopefully we can take a few pages from Nil's Mountain Scenery Book over at Silicon Valley Free-moN so people stop trying to eat the mountains.

beautiful clear creek and painted backdrop Chris!  From my POV, I'll take a painted backdrop over a photo-shopped one any day...they just feel warmer and compliment modeled scenery better.

Idaho Belt work continues despite the horrible weather.

Crews worked to hide seams in the backdrop, even with new lighting installed.  Testing GE Slimline 3 foot fixtures. Linkable up to 10. Promising, if the aquisition department can gather a few each month for the next year.

Track crews worked testing single tracked Kato concrete tie sections before installing them in two mainline tunnels. Once a clearance issues is trimmed away, track layers will have a green light.
