Same type of floristic wires, same sawdust, same glue, same type of paint and same types of fibres...actualy exactly  the same materials....and still "something completely different"... ;)

I finished another batch of trees. I was satisfied with my earlier results then I watched grove-dens video again and knew I could get better results.....

This time, I thinned the tree by clipping away about 1/4 of the wire branches. Last time I deviated from groves procedure by not bending the static grass branches down. That made the body of the tree look to bushy. I also didn’t have 3mm grass for the needles so I used 6mm. This time I used the 3mm, which were also a bit darker.

The two on the left are from my first batch, the two on the right are from tha latest.

Very impressive results, including the improvements in the second batch. Practice does work.  Jos is a great teacher, and you are good student of his technique. I also sense some talent here.  :)

I second that : they do improve almost each time!
But why using 3 mm fibres as immitation for the needles?
Try to use/add just -sieved- fine turf from woodland?
Finaly a tric to give the branches that "hanging small twigs"look:
Just blow them down right after adding . I mean not the the ones at the last as imm. of the needles but the ones that has to look like the smaller branches ...
I use a cheap( -not!!!! the wives one- ) hairblower and blow the fibres- gently....- holding the tree upright, down each time I add Fibres.
Add a picture  about how to make small fir trees.

and at the end the tree could be like these ones:

The top of the trees are almost the same...only made some longer trunks....;-)
The picture was made in 2015 and I think I made  still some small improvements since  :

Not only are the trees phenomenal but hands down the best scenery/ground cover in any scale modeling I have ever seen.

Thank you Lennart and Nuno81291 !
found a picture of the start of this diorama: the first 6 layers of grass fibres. From 1 to 6 mm.

so...it is NOT real.... :D

Version 3
This time I used a 3/16 dowel instead of 1/4, that’s about a 16” trunk vs. 22”
I also used fewer branches for a thinner tree. I also applied less static grass and instead of 3mm static grass for needles I used sifted woodland scenic fine turf....

Left to right is first, second and third version....

Definitely making some noteable progress.  The 3rd is markedly better than the 1st.

The 3rd version does look good but the bare light-colored "branches" look a bit odd to me.

The spray adhesive isn’t dry yet...it dries clear. I’m thinking if it still looks a bit white, I can mist the branch edges with dark green paint.....

Progress!! :)
Sometimes I do have that same problem: light colored branches...and indeed I use too some /little bit of spraypaint to solve that problem.

Now your trees are looking  more and more like  real....I am just curious about what kind of tree your modelling? Picea, Pinus, Abies, Chamaecyparis or Tsuga kind of trees?
They all have a- sort of-  "pattern" when it comes -  for example.- how/where the branches are placed at the trunk.
on this picture you can see on the left a kind of Abies species and on the right some Cham. or very jong sequoias....

or another tree: giant sequoia( small one)

or a kind of white pine:

They all have a "standard"kind of how the branches grow/what is typical for that tree.
It is up to you to find out how you manage that....IF you want to make the trees more like real of course ;)
When showing people how to make these typical features most of them say: "Okay...got it!! looks easy.....but when back at home.....mostof the showing techniqus  were erased/ gone in their minds... :D( the "empty room": watch  Mark Gungor on youtube :D)
So some/many  pictures of the tree you want to model are very important.
btw: isn't it habbit- forming?  :)  You can easily bocome addicted to it!

Good luck !

Jos
