Pete, you asked.

I also hope that more people share  :tommann: view of this hyper-analysis thread (and many similar threads on TRW) than seeing them as whiny or bitchy complaint thread (which is how Scottl seems to see it).  To me this thread presents many valid points and opinions on how to make a better model.

I answered with my opinion on these types of "discussions".

I for one see these threads as a giant . They throw manufacturers that are bringing new products to N Scale on the defensive, and they generally don't do much, if anything to change said products. It's usually a few people offering unsolicited and unwanted advice, and the rest of us watching the train wreck and hoping that the manufacturer doesn't get scared off.

Please don't twist my words into a strawman argument.

As I said, back to the topic at hand.  :D

It is also great to see that the Internet has drastically changed the way manufacturers connect with the hobbyists.  It opened up the door just for this type of direct exchanges between hobbyists and manufacturers.

I wonder if manufacturers consider that a good thing.

What say you, Rapido guys? Any other manufacturer care to comment?

It depends on how it is presented. If it is constructive and civil, then there is no problem. If it is presented in a model-bashing or condesending manner, it tends to get dismissed. And if the criticism is delivered as an absolute when the manufacturer has hard evidence to the contrary, or if an opinion on marketing strategy is presented as fact, it tends to be dismissed.

It's all in the presentation.

Just a word from the admin.

  • I've been working behind the scenes making sure this thread doesn't go out of control.  For the most part, the criticisms presented here are fair and not personal. I said for the most part.
  • In the future, I'm going to lock manufacturer-started product announcement threads.  If people want to comment on perceived shortcomings or offer praise, they can start an adjacent comment thread.
  • Until I'm told otherwise, I'm operating under the assumption that manufacturers want the kind of feedback found in this thread.  I welcome this minute criticism myself, as Ed N. and Richie gave me in regards to my recent weathering projects. In fact, this is kind of what the Railwire is all about, and I would have never progressed in my weathering if it wasn't for the constant feedback here.

Late to the party, as usual.  I feel somewhat vindicated with the announcement that the ladders are molded on.  I had commented about the add-on ladders and grabs on Intermountain cars being clunky for years, and that the added parts do little for the modeler other than drive up the price of manufacturing.

Bryan's example of the ESM car shows demonstrably that a few very simple tricks of the eye makes for a much more realistic model.

I shall crawl back under my rock now.

That's a wood roof if I ever saw one.  Rapido vindicated again!

The roof on the reefer immediately behind it sure looks like it has a metal roof.

Hmm... I'm gonna take

The cricket jumps across the room onto the other pad.

I'm not even sure there is a GARX 37' in that sea of red. Many different proto :tommann: types, just liked the photo.  :P

How could there be?   ;)

Couldn't model that scene anyway.  Look at the hatches.   8)

I would love to have that car.  It's in my top 7-8 cars needed for Waterloo.
