Need Elesco feedwater pump casting
« on: September 17, 2014, 03:17:32 PM »

Folks,
For my NP W-5, I need a somewhat unusual Elesco feedwater pump.  Note, this is the pump I am talking about,
not the cylindrical heater that sits above the smokebox front.  This is the pump that goes along the side of the engine.

Here is a close-up of a brass HO version:

Anybody know of an N Scale shell that has one of these?  There are no parts from Detail Associates, GHQ,
or Miniatures by Eric that look like this (at least none that I have ever found).

Before I start snipping and soldering and scratchbuilding this thing, I wanted to see if anyone knew of
a commercial casting or a shell I can steal one off of.

Thanks

Start scratching.... I don't think I've ever seen this pump in N scale.

I figured you'd say that, Jason.  Heh!
It's a real oddball.  Cary makes a brass HO casting of it, and they call it an "Early" Elesco Feedwater Pump.
There are not many prototype photos of these four W-5's around, especially taken from the left side.

I have tracked down all the ones from the web, from the Ron V Nixon collections, and I have NP books
like the Schenk and Frey one.   The "latest" I have is a 1946 photo, and it still shows this style of pump,
so I will assume they left it on there until the engines were scrapped.
(In other words, I can't weasel out of it and put a later style pump on there)

Here's the same pump on a brass HO Santa Fe 2-10-2...
I now know it is an Elesco type "W-6-1/2" feedwater pump... if happens to help.

Maybe you can find it in a larger scale and "Hydroshrink" it. Then cast it in resin. Right Jason?  Or find someone to do this for you.

Small off set parts are difficult to shrink cast.  I think scratch building it would be easier.

The only Elesco pump I know of is the one produced by GHQ for their Southern Railway Ms4 Mike conversion.  The parts can be seen in the forum thread linked to below...
http://www.ghqmodels.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3301

The entire conversion,as well as individual parts, can be purchased from Republic Locomotive Works.

Guys guys...

I have all the GHQ Elesco parts.

The GHQ one is NOT this pump.  It includes a heater tank, pipes, and a pump, but the pump is the wrong one.  It is the newer style.
