Printer friendly output.
« on: August 06, 2014, 07:20:51 PM »
As long as everyone else is in a uproar about various changes, etc. I might as well as this which has been on my mind off and on.

One of the cool things about the old Atlas was the "Printer friendly" link at the top of every thread.  And the nicest thing was that when you clicked it, you got a new window with the whole thread formatted for printer output, with pictures, links, etc.  And even nicer (at least on the Mac) is you can print to a PDF with just a change of the output option (I know, Windows will too with an add-on IIRC).  If you've never done it, go ahead and try it.  I'll wait... http://forum.atlasrr.com/

Back already?  Neat, huh?

Now, my question.  Is there an option under the Simple Machines software to provide something similar?  I know I can print each page through the web browser, but with long threads that means I have to print multiple pages and then stitch them together and the formatting just isn't all the pretty as compared to what the output from the Atlas boards Snitz software provided.

So, no complaint.  Just a question.  If no, I understand and I'll keep doing what I've been doing when I want to archive a thread - changing my default page length to the max number of posts and printing them to PDF in parts and adjusting the margins.  It's just a pain to switch back and forth when I want to save something.

I'd make this just a PM to Tom, but perhaps others might have ideas how to do this if the SMF software can't accommodate it.

P.S.  I know there's a "Print" button at the top but it doesn't include the pictures when you use it.  At least most of the time.  Hmmm. Maybe because pictures aren't hosted here? I dunno.

John, it's in the upper right (I just modified the code to include images).

And John, in the future, send me a mean-spirited PM, post somewhere that you're going to quit this forum, and make one or two passive-aggressive comments. :tommann:

Thanks Tom!!! I just reprinted all the JDColombo sound installs as a test and it's perfect!  Now where's the PayPal donation button?

Hi Tom.  It's me again. :)  I just tried to print a thread and noticed that pictures aren't printing again.  Did your code change get backed out?  The thread I tired to print was https://www.therailwire.net/forum/index.php?topic=31637.msg404922 .  The imbedded YouTube shows up, but the other pictures are just text copies of the links.

Also with this thread: https://www.therailwire.net/forum/index.php?action=printpage;topic=34800.0  The attached pictures don't show up either.

Same request as before, if something can fix this that would be great. If it's too big a hassle, don't worry and I'll figure a workaround.

It looks like updates of the forum code will stomp over my code change.  To get the images to appear, add a
Code: [Select]
;images=1 to the end of the url.

Like so:

https://www.therailwire.net/forum/index.php?action=printpage;topic=34800.0;images=1

It looks like attached images won't appear...that is a bigger change and I'll look into it.
