A few dozen more trees later, I still have dozens left to go...

And for giggles I installed a working signal (replacing the non-functional plastic one on the original) that's very retro, with big, old-fashioned grain-of-wheat bulbs. Alas, it has Classic Modeling Mistake #123: traffic light color arrangement (red on top, green on bottom, instead of the reverse).

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who purchased a few of these signals

Sadly this layout was never completed because of a move, but I did have this crossing protected with a DPDT switch. This is a horrible picture, but you can almost make out the branch
signal is displaying stop and the main line signals are displaying a clear indication.

David, I'm really enjoying watching you refurbish this little layout. Thanks for posting and keep up the great work, you are a true master of small and compact layouts.

This has been a fun project to watch.

Back in my college days, I worked at a hobby shop part time.  I was given an old Marklin Z scale vacuum prefab layout to build for the display window.  They wanted it done fast and cheap.  It was fun (an my first foray into small scale stuff).  This project greatly reminds me of that little layout.

A bit more work is done on the scenery, using the dreaded "clump foliage." In this case, I think it fits into the style of the layout.

Dang, yer good. Compare these latest shots with the B4's... hard to believe it's the same layout.

Question, though... does the main oval raise up along the back side? To the level of the coal spur? If so, what do you figure that grade works out too?

Yes.

Measured it directly with a digital level: 5.8%. Made worse by the fact that one of the curves looks to be around 6.5" radius... :scared:

Double yowzer!!

Hey, when your passing siding can barely handle a switcher, caboose, and four 40-footers, that grade's not that outlandish.

Well, with the exception of the Heljan meat packing plant (which is due to arrive in 4-5 days), the layout is done. Time to compare before and afters...
