Alexander, first, I think this could be a great product. Maybe a six pack, and if you could design it such that the the amount of protective waste material could be minimized, the per unit price would be more palatable? It certainly seems like a much needed item, if well done and reasonably priced. At six bucks a pop, it would need to be very well done. May I make a suggestion?

It's hard to judge this tiny model from pictures, but my reaction is that it feels a little clunky. I can live with the wheels as these came with diffent types of wheels, from very thin profile iron strap to wood to steel and rubber and I understand the limitations of 3D printing. But the deck looks wrong to me: it looks like a layer of four by fours or some such butted side by side, with no structural support. Realworld carts typically had much thinner planking over a frame, with maybe a fascia board along the sides. There are lots of pics on the web. One simple fix would be to have the side slots only about an inch and a half deep, with a horizontal line representing the depth of the planking and the side below either receeding or protruding slightly. I would also attempt to lighten up the pull hardware a little.

Well, my two cents worth...
(or quite a few dollars worth as I need a bunch of them for my San Bernardino depot area...

Bulk Pack is the way to go IMO

6 pack, 12 pack, 24 pack... all would allow for a lower price point....

you could use em' all over... in many different era's...

Thanks for your input, I will try and not to miss any of your points

The bulk pack will reduce the per unit cost considerably since there is a $5 handling charge per model in FUD so I will follow seusscaboose and multi pack them.

One question - one has straight wheels, the other turned would this be the preferred way or to have all with straight wheels?

I think I have the protective material about right as it is quite strong and the carts are best described as fragile, I have to think of operators having to hold the model for cleaning. Had I thought about it first I would have left some of it on for holding whilst painting before chopping it off.

Mmmmmm the deck - I pondered long and hard and that is really the trade off to make everything else as small as I could, I am sure that if I made it any thinner then it would not print, it is the deck that gives the model a enough strength to hold together. I will have another look at it and see if I can reduce it a bit.

The wheels were about version 8 of what I tried, I thought it more important to have see through spokes.

The pull hardware is on the minimums for FUD and I agree it does look oversize but that is what we have got.

The model is very close to a plan that was in model railroader Sept 87, there is also a more modern cart in Aug 55

Alexander, thanks for listening, I understand. Ultimately you're the guy making the effort and taking the risk.

Just to clarify, I didn't suggest you thin the deck, just that the vertical lines creating the four by four look along the edge not extend the full depth but just a small portion, with a horizontal line visually separating what should look like the decking from a beam or board supporting it... Structurally, it would still be the same.
Oh, and I like the spoked wheel version too.

Ahhh, I see what you mean, I will make that alteration it makes sense. Some times I cannot see the wood for the trees.

Until I upload the model to shapeways I cannot really say for sure but the price does not just double for every extra 2 carts.

I will try and get it done tomorrow.

I agree that you leave the deck thickness what it is but thin the board separations (not so deep and wide) and remove the board separations along the edges so they look like separate sideframe boards. This means stop the board separations just before they get to the edge of the decking. Painting the wood brown and the "sideframes" REA green would heighten the difference.
Also second the bulkpack idea. As for the wagon tongue, any perfectionist who thinks it too thick could cut it off and substitute a thin brass or styrene version.

Alexander, thanks for making the decking change I suggested. I just ordered an assorted 12 pack for thirty bucks including shipping; that's $2.50 apiece, a much better deal!
I looked at the rest of your shop and like some of your traction models as well... too bad you don't have any Pacific Electric juice jacks
