Close. When going to big-name commercial sites (news sites, mostly), I am astounded by the sometimes dozens of different domains the browser is calling-up to paint a single page. Considering that a lot of professional content relies on external APIs (googleapis.com, for example), there is layer upon layer (upon layer!) of unique server calls for content that was once "simple". It's the internet variant of Wirth's Law.

That is so annoying!  My browser has the NoScript add-on installed, and when I visit such sites for the fist time, like you said, it lists sometimes dozens of other domain names which I need to allow for the page to fully display.  It is getting to be too much.  In the good old times, a website was contained within its own single domain.  Nowadays you don't really know which of the external sites are harvesting your info and which might be actually harmful (malware, etc.)

Yep, gonna keep on with all of one of my sites in one domain.

Of course, I'm OCD enough that I control from the OS on up.

8/31/14 @ 13:00 CDT - serious site performance problems again. 20-30 seconds to ACK a click, 1.5 to 2 minutes to fully paint the requested page.

:(

EDIT: 20 minutes later, perfect. It's almost as if the hosting company is letting things deteriorate then monitoring for site performance complaints, only fixing it then. Nah... too much "conspiracy theory" thinking... but, still. :|

9/10/14 @ 13:15 CDT - same as above, up to a minute to acknowledge click, 2:00 or more to finish painting the page.

A large number of sites are using content delivery networks, so even if there are no calls to affiliates or other entities, multiple locations need to be contacted - and waited on.  Another issue is that fonts are often served for sites from other sites.  No way around it for anything but the simplest sites.

Thanks for the updates.  It seems as if when the forum traffic increases, performance decreases. :|

I'm of the thought it's not that simple, Tom. Unless you have stats that indicate otherwise, I'm not getting the impression it's related to the demand on this forum. It could be other forums hammering on the database engine, but AFAIK it's business as usual here. If it was purely our forum activity, I would then expect performance hits in the evenings. FWIW, YMMV.
