If the owner of the closed company still possesses the ability to create them, then it would be a No-No.

I thought it's a matter of whether the reproduction was for personal use or profit.
Failing to prepare is preparing to fail.

Doug,

I have re-tweaked the re-railer.

First off it looks like I had the proportions right, just my scale was out, not surprising as I was guessing from a photo.  In the pic below my first attempt is in the left, a third larger than the correct thing.

Making it the correct size has thrown a spanner in the works!  These puppies are small and getting the holes in the lugs to work means the lug it self becomes to big compared to the re-railer, so guessing you want to mount these the same way as the picture you attached I also added the hanger lugs and support bar.  This should print.

I also added the down stand on the left hand side and tided up the edges a bit.  Also both sides have the same bend in them, I think it was an optical illusion with the original image.  I know its a bit chunky in places but I think that is the best we can do.

What do you think, will this work for you?  I am happy to tweak some more if I can.

Nice work James!  I'll have to buy some, just to see how they come out.  Do you have a link?

Now can I give you my list of parts?   I'd pick spare knuckles for starters, that's another one that many locos have.  (Sunrise used to make these as a single, cast part.)

Thanks Guys,

I'll just wait for the official nod from Doug and then I will let you have at them!

Ednadolski, I can have a look at the spare knuckles.  Looking at the image I guess a knuckle sat in the bracket printed as one piece would work?  Then you can simply fix the whole thing to the bulk head?

Ok Guys,

We have the high ball!

I normally order test prints of all my stuff before I release it but as Doug is so keen, here they are.  I am 99.9% certain they will print okay  :D

A set of 8.

Just FYI, James is the mastermind behind these UP water bottle models. Suffice it to say, he's a bloody FUD genius!  :D

Precisely, that would be very similar to what the SRE parts are like (and comparable parts in HO, FTM):

As you can see, the SRE parts are a little oversized, plus you can also tell that they were designed to be cast from a mold.  A 3D printed part could probably avoid that limitation, at least to some degree.   I'll dig around and see if I can come up with some proto dimensions.

BTW, what CAD program & file format(s) you you use for this?   My thought is that if the Shapeways parts turn out to be constrained by the process resolution, it should in theory be possible to submit the design to one of these places that does higher-resolution printing.  The cost would of course be higher, but it might be interesting to consider just getting a quote or estimate.

Thanks for looking at this!

Hi all,

I received some of the type 1 Re-Railers the other day and here they are on some of my locos.

The type 2, truck mounted Re-Railers, test print is going to be ordered next week.

Wow those came out really well. James, I feel like it's been asked before in another thread, but what CAD program do you use to draw your parts for Shapeways?

Hi Sawyer,

I mainly use Trimble SketchUP to layout the models.

I received some of the Type 2 Re-Railers the other day.  These are the truck mounted ones.

They are a lot smaller than the type 1

But they do look good, here is my GP20 with them on

They need some weathering but think they look good!

If you want some they are on my Shapeways site along with the Type 1. https://www.shapeways.com/shops/JamesTrainParts?section=Detail+Parts&s=0
