There are a quite a few bridges on the Columbia & Western.  Seems like I have spent the better part of two years of hobby time working on them.  There are also tunnels and snowsheds....yes snowsheds: you know " wooden tunnels" :).

East to West...sorry for the volume.

Troup Junction trestles, culverts and bridges




4th crossing of the Kootenay River


Lemon Creek Bridge (actually on the Slocan Sub)


Slocan River Bridge


McCormack Creek Bridge


Farr Creek Bridge


Barr Creek Bridge

and finally, the 5th Crossing of the Kettle.


...oh, and the short Paulson tunnel for good measure :)

Might as well through in these two from a few years ago.  The first is the Loudwater River bridge, kitbashed from three AHM HO pony truss spans back about 1980.  It has been moved once, and been rebuilt a couple times, once after having a cat slide through it.  Its original use was to span a window in my bedroom in our old house, which is why the cat was involved...  The deck truss section is scratchbuilt.

The other is on the west side of the mountains, and was kitbashed from a Vollmer through truss and several ME deck girder spans, which aren't visible.  It was inspired by the GN/BN/BNSF Sunset Falls bridge in Washington state.

Here is another BC bridge.  Although not as spectacular as most of the ones posted here, it is a bridge nonetheless.  It is a Glulam main span with two shorter jump spans at Mile 601.2 on the Chetwynd Sub on what used to be the British Columbia Railway.  It's the railway's first of three crossings of the Pine River.  The real-world bridge is shown so there is obviously a lot of work yet to do on my part.  Please excuse the crappy smart phone photo.

I would love to know what the history on this bridge is. I can't for the life of me figure out why it was done that way. Thanks for providing the prototype pic.

Not so common for railway bridges but very common, at least in BC, for bridges on logging roads.

I would love to know what the history on this bridge is. I can't for the life of me figure out why it was done that way. Thanks for providing the prototype pic.

I don't what the history of this bridge is but I know it was in place in 1985 and still there in June, 2008 when I took that photo.

Mark:  Thank you!  And, obviously, I got the captions reversed!  The one you liked is the Loudwater River bridge, made from HO parts.

For future readers, I'm correcting the captions now...

The "glulam" bridge makes sense in the Northwest and BC, for the same reason GN built plywood sided boxcars instead of steel:  Support your local industries.  Steel is expensive and has to be imported (at least from elsewhere in the country).  Wood is cheap and locally available.
