People never seem to include old, abandoned, partially-demolished, leaning, derelict, etc structures on model layouts. But it gives a sense of past/present to the scene. And yes, even in "the old days" there were still abandoned, partially-burned, shabby, rundown and etc buildings.

The way the lights shine at the mirror it makes it look sunny over "there"

I may have to put a strip of LEDs above the water to make it reflect correctly.

I hate to be a prick, but to me that stream looks more like a deep water shipping channel than a meandering midwestern creek.  If it were me, I would add more green and fill the inner banks with silt, a la Lance:

That may be TODAY's Mohoning River -- but back in 1948 (pre-EPA) the brown probably had green or rusty orange steaks running down it, ribbons of oil sheen, town storm (possibly sewage) drain outflows into it, etc. Rivers back east were pretty messed up then.
How realistic do you want to go?

Ariel shows the same bridge at the bottom, but the sky is reflecting in the murky river.

Murky it is, but that is not a real river.  Lance gets an A for natural river features in his old layout, but this proto shot is a carved up channel.

Try some military olive drab. It should drop your color right into your proto shots.
