So I got bored and dusted off the layout  :scared:

Was going to detail and weather up the RS2 I got from RL Smith. Early on they didn't have the 4 corner brackets with the marker lights so I don't need that. But I see on the short hood I need another horn and a vent. Also the stack between the cab windows. Does any one know what that was for?

And early on the road number wasn't on the cab. So I will erase the number and the diamond and slap a diamond on the cab.

I believe that is the steam generator exhaust between the cab windows, and the other parts you see are probably steam generator related as well..

So searching. The vent above the number board is the steam generator intake. So the stack must be the exhaust.

If they came from the factory without road numbers, they probably didn't stay that way for very long.

Funny you post 902  :)


I guess the number is real small in the lower left corner of the cab.

Technically I model 1948 and stretched that to 1949 for PA1's. So I would want to model this RS2 as it was delivered. At the top of this page I zoomed in at that is #900. 900 and 901 were often used to Cleveland. I also like the newness of the 900 as it doesn't even have wind deflectors on the cab window yet.

All done.


I didn't weather it too much. But I did take the trucks apart and paint the contacts. Here is a close up of the vent and stack. Horns are Kato RDC.

Now you need a finer brake wheel with less spokes so it doesn't totally obscure the RR name. Let me know if you find one somewhere, I need one.

The New York Susquehanna & Western used some ex Erie Stillwell coaches. I think at one time they might of been painted silver too.

Enough with the diesel crap  :P

Slowly working on another Berkshire using Keystone Details rear trailing truck. In real life the ash pan sat on top of the trailing truck, but to simplify things I mounted it to the frame. I'm running around 13.5" curves on the inside and I thought the ash pan hanging out while going around curves would look silly. Also mounted the rear truck "bearing plate" to the frame. Still more "stuff" to add at the rear.

All of this happens to fix one pet peeve of mine about steam locomotives. All the open space under there. So far it runs great around my curves.

Yes, that area poorly modeled in N scale (too much daylight showing). Well except the Kato FEF3 - they did a good job dealing with the trailing truck and the ash pan.  Probably the first for N scale.
But the reason they leave a big gap there is to have clearance  for when the model starts claiming a grade.  How will your model handle grades?
