Though I grew up in Sacramento, I'm not an SP aficionado. 
With that said, did this class start out as Cab Forwards only to revert to more standard operation?

Bryan, when the 12 of this class were delivered from Lima, they were as you see them. Actually it was the early 4000 class Mallets that were converted to "Cab Ahead". Speaking of Lima, do the enclosed "sport" cab, solid pilot and "skyline" casing look familiar? Think GS-4... same builder. Really makes these locos stand out. As an aside, they spent most of their lives working the desolate "Modoc" line, in which tunnels were not an issue.

Oh... Jason, if I didn't know better, I'd say there is a fair amount of "Orange, Red, Silver & Black" in your blood along with "Armor Yellow"...  :D ;)

Mike, I'm thrilled to see you chime in!  Can't wait to have my own AC-9 that runs and pulls great.  My Key AC-9 looked amazing, but just didn't pull worth a darn and wasn't really the greatest runner.  With Jason's help my poor runner has morphed into something awesome!

Hey thanks for the full explanation and complements, it really means a lot!

Here is the latest work on the AC-9.  As pointed out by Robert Coffee the front marker light should not be red ( unless the engine is running backwards).  The pilot has been painted silver with silver bands showing, bell painted, cab wind screen installed (thanks Bob G.), final dull coat installed with a light overcoat of black over the lettering.  I still need to installed the engine info on the cab, I just need to look at the correct arrangement that Phillip sent me (thanks).

Yes Mike, I do have a lot of orange red black and silver in the blood.  My original plan was to build the full Overland Route west of Cheyenne.  That would have ended up being a lot Of SP.   :D

Jason, is it possible to get the smoke lifter that is on the 'Deck' next to the AC-9 as a separate piece? I've been needing one for another loco I've built and didn't even know where to start scratching one. BTW, I'll be getting a AC-9 boiler just as soon as I can finish one or two of my other engines that I have started and not finished so keep one reserved for me (his stuff is just as nice as it looks).

Hmmm.... funny how that Deck just happened to "sneak" into the picture???

That "9" really came together rather nicely. If I may, how about the next one "finished" with a "Modoc" line look??

WooHoo, Jason hinted about some 29-hunnerd's!!!!!! (as the Santa Fe engineers recall their favorite steamer). When I was working on the Santa Fe (old Slaton, Division) in the 70's, I would join other engineers, all stuck at a hotel at the other end of our division. When the talk turned to steam, all had their favorite 29-hunnerd story.

Question for Mike Madonna -

You mentioned "finishing" an AC-9 in "modoc" line look. What is the modoc line look? Some of the photos I've seen of the AC-9's, had white along the running boards and on the railings on the front porch. Is that the modoc  look? I have seen one photo of, 3805 I think, that had a large round thingy ( looked like a drumhead ) in front of the air pumps. Do you know what that might have been and is that part of the modoc look? Curious mind needs to find out. Might want to do my 9 in that not so common format.

Jason, you're onto something. It's more of a "look" in regards to how the loco was exposed to the "elements". Hot, arid conditions and a blazing sun coupled with poor water quality made for a faded, rusty (in some spots), water stained behemoth. I'll have to look through my "library" for an example. Jason's weathering captures a "9" as a well worked hauler that has seen some of the aforementioned conditions. IMHO, weathering gives motive power or rolling stock uniqueness and "character"....

Does someone know what the device, gadget, ? ?, is on the nose of this AC-9. Was it on "as built" or added in the later years?
