SP AC-9

I was able to install handrails, pilot ladders with guards rail and cooling pipes installed on the first engine.  The pipe hangers make all the difference in the world.  There is one flaw in the cooling pipes towards the front, solder got onto multiple pipes filling in the gap and I can get it off.  Oh well, its not too noticeable and it makes the assembly stronger.  Hopefully I'll learn from my slight mistakes on this first engine!
BTW "TIX" flux makes all the difference on this job-

This one was getting by me... (so many threads, so little time).

Very nice work, Jason.  Don't sweat the little bit of solder in that pipe hanger.  I doubt it will show when you paint it.

The obvious question, where, when, how to get one and really least important looking at the incredible job done - how much - keeping in mind that I am in Australia, I have a Bachmann EM-1 just waiting eagerly to be dressed as an SP AC-9.

Though I grew up in Sacramento, I'm not an SP aficionado. 
With that said, did this class start out as Cab Forwards only to revert to more standard operation?

To answer your question. No, the AC-9's did not start out as cab forwards. The SP purchased these as coal burners to use between Tucumcari, New Mexico and El Paso, Texas. They went with coal because they had hauling agreements with the coal mine in Dawson, New Mexico. When that  contract played out the SP moved these to the west coast, converted them to oil burners and I believe operated them over the MODOC line.

I think I am pretty close to correct. Perhaps an SP  lover can shed some knowledge as well. Beautiful locomotive and awesome work by Jason. Guess who has one on order ? ?
