Pennsy M1

So, what kind of interest would there be in casting of a Pennsy M1 designed to fit a Bachman J class  with modified trailing truck?  The short comings of this conversion would be the wrong type cross head.  Filing the rods is a pretty easy fix. The frame will likely need some milling.

I am about to pull the trigger,  I ask because I don't want another K4 experience :)

So, in other word....who would want casting costing around $100.00 shipped.

Thanks for the offer Jason, but a Pennsy does not interest me.

You're learning, Dee.

Hmm... is this the thread
where we get to see all
the SPFs...?

Two scientists create a teleportation ray, and they try it out on a cricket. They put the cricket on one of the two teleportation pads in the room, and they turn the ray on.
The cricket jumps across the room onto the other pad.
"It works! It works!"

You mean... you made a Pennsy K4 casting and it generated little interest from the SPF's?

Yes, the drivers are significantly undersized on the heavy mountain as compared to the J which is within 2 inches of needed diameter.  You can always install a heavy mountain....... but it's not gonna look right.

I had much of this experience with the MT4.

I'd be in. I was in for the T1, but I somehow missed the K4 and the H10/9 announcements.
Never argue with idiots; they'll drag you down to their level, then beat you with experience.

How well does the J run and how DCC friendly is it?

Even if the project gets me to $300 it's still less than half of what I'll pay for brass.

I'm in for a postwar version...   Straight M1 or M1b preferred.

Dave,

They're supposed to be really smooth running model locomotives that are DCC friendly.  I have flirted with purchasing one on several occasions, because #611 was in excursion service in the era that I model (1983-86).  One of these days, I know that I'll bite.  I'm fairly certain that you won't be disappointed with the J's mechanism.

I have a NW J and can vouch that it's a really nice, smooth running model.  I haven't had the chance to DCC it yet.

He makes a K4 shell?
I'd be in for a shell. What to do about tenders?
Would also love a J and a hippo.

I for one would have jumped on the K4 had I not already had one in brass converted to DCC.

By my era, 1956, few K4s still plied the Middle Division.  However, most of the 301 M1 fleet was still active on the Middle Division...so much so that roughly every other freight train would have been pulled by an M1.

I can't make excuses for the SPF community writ large...was the K4 advertised beyond the Railwire?  Here at the Railwire it might have been timing...  A few folks had done the Minitrix/Kato C55 upgrade and I'd just gotten my brass one wired for DCC when Jason came up on the net.
