And now, another article from Neurosurgery Today.

(at least that's what it feels like.)

It is unfortunate that I had sealed the nose decals since Peteski's nose heralds are better.
But you can't undo what has been done.  (at least in this case, I'm not going to strip the Cabs and re-do them just for a detail that can ONLY be see under close macro photography).

So, here is a slight review.
The Streamstyle nose decals were only adequate.  The very fine lines often dropped out in printing.

Here is cab A with the original nose herald.

You will notice that THE on the left does not look that great (hold that thought.).

From the door rightward..... the EE and the entire word ROAD are missing parts.
So since I had two sets of decals, I laid another  EE ROAD on top of this and now it looks better.

But the H & E on the left need improving.

Now here is the B cab.
Original- the same problem with THE  and on th right the same EE problem.  But ROAD looks better.

I did the same thing on this end.  I also got a fine brush and added a little bit of orange to cover some of that black overspray on the right. (You can still see it under brutal close macro shots, but you can't really tell with the naked eye).
The EE looks fixed.

Therefore, on BOTH ends, I want to see if I can improve the THE.  Each end needs tiny crossbars (A end needs 3 and the B end needs 2).
I know this is slightly obsessive, and that no one will even be able to see this with the naked eye.
But I hope to show this in an article one day and under brutal macro photography, you can clearly see the herald is “messed up” (as we say in the Deep South).

So today's operation is ONLY  for article photography.  It is almost impossible to even see this with the naked eye.

Out of two decal sets, this is all I had to work with.  Not much.

The first step was to install JUST the crossbar on the H.  I about went blind, but got it reasonably into position.

Then I thought about Peteski's wonderful decals...... and I thought- Heck, he made me six nose heralds, why not cannibalize them?

So once again, Peter comes to the rescue.

Here is the A end (the most important end).
You see:
My slightly heavy H crosbar.
And a single letter E from Peteski.
Also, from the old decal, I applied half a W and an A.
Now we're talking.  This is acceptable.  Better than before.

Here is the B end.
This is Petski's H.
And Petski's E.
The W,  K,  & O are a little weak, but this is now acceptable for me.

I can sleep better now.

Don't hit the hay just yet, Ron. Those door window cutouts still look microscopically asymmetrical to me!  :scared:

Oops, sorry. I live in that same OCD universe (just without the skills), so my brain does trend towards bonkerdom from time to time. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!  :D :o :D

LOL.

When I said it was an emotional experience dropping the boiler room into a cup of acetone.....

It wasn't an accident.  I did it on purpose.  LOL.

I was stripping just the boiler room to start over on the boiler room.

Woohooo!   Wait till you see version 2!

Oh goodness, I misread the other post, I thought there was another snag.  I'm glad it is going so smoothly.

I have to admit that Ron is obsessive - but I like it!

Looks like we are getting close to completion.  Very nice.  One thing I'm wondering about it what is now the value of this model. Ron started with what was probably $600-$800 model.  If ew counted all the man-hours this project took (not even counting paints, decals and other parts), I wonder how much it would be worth.

PS. I wouldn't be surprised if Ron kept a log of how many hours he spent working on this model (after all he documents *EVERYTHING*!  ;)

Actually, Ron started out with what amounts to a crappy/nigh-worthless kit (worth a couple-three hundred bucks tops). But now? Wow, I'm thinking well over $1K.

I am very interested to see what this exquisite piece of workmanship will fetch.  I couldn't bear to part with it.  In my experience the further away you are from a commodity product the more you find that its input costs have little bearing on its value/price.

Right! How quickly I forgot that it was a kit from leftover parts at Kumata.
I'm thinking more like 3-5K range (going by man hours alone).

I'm not sure Ron will ever sell it. But even if he did, he will never get a fair price for it (which would pay him more than minimum wage rate, or maybe less).

Has anyone ever paid $5K for an N scale locomotive? This might be uncharted territory. Then again, it is a one-percenter world now  :|

The eBay listing would need a link to this thread for any bidder to realize what all was done.

There is a link to Ron's PDF which I think has all the same stuff.

I have to admit that Ron is obsessive - but I like it!

Looks like we are getting close to completion.

We are indeed closer.  But there is still so much to do:

Things still to do:

Paint boiler room window glass gray.
Install gray-painted windows in boiler room with epoxy.
Final clearcoat of Boiler Room.

Cab door handrails- Paint red on lower area.
install door rails on Cabs. Might be superglued since I don't want to damage the paint with solder heat.

Create 2 grab irons on each nose- make silver.  Paint or decals?
Create 2 grab irons on cab sides.
Possibly sand blast grab irons.
Paint grabs silver, install

Check on BLMA wind deflectors to please Railwire guys.  Need to order.

Final touch up of various colors.
Good final clearcoat.
Install window glass in Cabs with epoxy.
Install headlight lenses.
Install/glue weights in Cabs.

Paint/blacken those shiny wheels to keep the Railwire guys happy ( :P).

Final assembly.
Possibly add some weight to boiler room.  Can be tricky- don't ruin the balance.
Re-Balance decoders.

Go to hobby shop and search WWII etched parts looking for lightning bolts.
Make fake pantograph wire if possible.

See if an HO steam loco smoke unit will work in boiler room.

Take article-quality photos.

Surprises that have yet to be revealed.   8)

While I documented a lot....
Unfortunately, I did not document hours.

Having worked on this for going on a year with only a few breaks here and there.... there just has to be well over 1,000 hours in this thing.  It is hard to imagine ever getting enough to "make money" when labor is included.

There is no doubt this is in large measure a labor of love.

Jason

At present, there is no PDF for this thread.

I did make a PDF of the custom hybrid soldering station I created (I took the PDF down, but will one day put it back up.).

I also have been making PDFs of this thread for possible future reference.
But with so many post, pages, and photos.... it's going to be a really big file.

We will see what happens.
