I have no idea what your track plan is outside of these pictures, but perhaps you could just double track that mainline and avoid the awkward looking short stretch of single track.  Just place appropriate crossovers where and if necessary.

As DKS captured, the "Main" is just a set of stub end track that represents KCS north south mainline north of baton rouge.  I have it at two tracks to mimic the passing sidings built along side most of the chemical plants.  so double tracking is definitely a possibility, but I'd have to have a crossover somewhere relatively close to the yard tracks to make it work.

I have a curved LH that can be made available... just need to uninstall it from the bones of Cumberland Station.  Just let me know.

Looks like I need 3 turnout to make this happen - one straight RH as drawn here on the yard lead, one curved (?) LH after that to start the crossover as we sweep the curve, and one straight LH to complete the crossover before we get back up to the exiting two tracks.

hum . . . . I hate not being a visual processor - I just can't "see it" mentally.

For whatever reason, this seems too complicated for what I'm trying to do - but that may be the lack of sleep talking (Tucker's been up every night this week at around 2AM)

That's generally what I had in mind when I suggested flip-flopping the left-hand and right-hand turnouts.  Get some sleep and, hopefully, you'll see that it's not so complicated.  Oh, and I don't think that a curved turnout is necessary for the third turnout, but you could go there, if you prefer.

P.S.  It just occurred to me that the area on Eric's layout where we completely gutted and redesigned the track plan is "Tucker."  Now, that was a lot more complicated.  That Tucker cost me some sleep, too.

I don't think it could be made any simpler, not and still be functional. You've got two tracks from Elkins, and (essentially) two from your existing layout; basically the front two tracks and rear two tracks are being joined, and you just need a crossover to make it all work. As you have it sketched, I think the foreground track may be angled a bit too acutely, and the one at the rear left may not be angled forward enough. Regardless, the concept is the same, and it appears that an ordinary left  t.o. will take care of the third switch, foreground center, to complete the crossover. Here's a slightly different visual take, in case it helps make more sense:

Why not make the switching shelf so that it pivots away from the wall when in use? Put a door hinge right at the corner and run the track straight onto the shelf. It might work better and look better than the current proposed solution, which seems to have some funky geometry. Does the big wooden file cabinet absolutely have to stay in that spot in the house?  Just a thought.
