Plus it's easier to push your Mini Metals around making motor sounds...   :D

Streets look awesome, Chris.

These projects are giving me the itch to get something done...  Still a ways off, though.

Ha ha who thought I gave up already?

Another couple hours fitting a new road piece:

It took a lot to get going, I just stared at the layout for about 20 minutes. I need to get roads down so I can keep going with everything else.

Me! Me! Pick Me!

I look at all those roads and think, man, scenery is easier.

Must be a Mod-u-trak  thing, but I thought roads WERE scenery.

Chris,

I haven't gotten the 0.060 black styrene out of the package to begin fitting road pieces yet, so I am curious how you are mating the road with the track?  Are you notching the styrene or removing spikes to allow the road to abut the rail?  How are you dealing with 0.060 thick styrene and Code 55 rail?

Dave,
Most of the crossing will have wood planks on each side of the rail:

https://picasaweb.google.com/ErieChris333/IndustrialLayout#5910441772299718882

I used Micro Engineering N scale ties, but strip wood will work. On the outside of the rails the wood should butt right up to the rail, so yes I just cut off the spike heads.

The sidewalk plus road is about the same hight as the crossing. About an inch away I notch out the road and bend it up a little. This way the road will dip up a hair to meet the hight of the sidewalk.

The track cutting through the road and into Vulcan Mfg along with a couple others will have the road butt right up to the rail. For that I used my milling machine like a router and milled off ~.030" about 1/4 deep into the road. I slipped on one piece and had to make it twice

This is why it takes so long, I haven't even started detailing yet, just fitting.

Thanks for the info.  Yeah, I knew it was going to be meticulous, which is why I haven't even gotten started yet.  But, I will.  Thanks for your help.  I hope my roads come out as nice as yours.

Dave, You have it a little bit easier as I have like 15 crossings with a few on each piece of street.

Did a little bit more work.

New toy  :D

Hopefully this shows how the street comes up to the sidewalk level at the crossing.

BTW about that other thread on photos...  All of these layout photos taken so far were with my phone. I listen to MP3s while working and I can just grab the phone and take a pic. There wouldn't be nearly as many if I had to drag out my other camera.

I was just referencing Chris's comment that he thought he'd get farther on this layout because it didn't have expanses of *green* scenery.  But I suppose anything that isn't a train is scenery.
