The future of the CSX mountain sub, is unknown. Last fall I moved, but just down the road. I'm renting out the old place so I don't have to move the layout. But with it down the road it is harder to find time to play. The new house has a finished basement with more room then the garage that the layout currently resides. So do I just start over or do I try to move the old layout. The layout will be fairly easy to move out of the garage but to get it in the new house I will have to nock a hole in the wall.

How much of a hole?   It might be easier to deal with some 2x4's and wallboard than starting over on a layout.  Just a thought.

there are some small windows high up on the wall and the door with very steep steps. Its about one foot to narrow to fit my widest parts and with them being long I would have to dig out the steps to slide them in.

You may find it easier to salvage what you can from the old layout and do-over to fit the new space. Probably not what you want to hear, but it would be easier to drag lumber down the steps than to try and preserve something that will need care and handling, not to mention a rebuild anyway. Good luck. The original Mtn Sub is/was a sweet layout.

That must be some basement.  I recall when I was there the garage had lots of room and wasn't all devoted to the layout.

As for moving it, perhaps some sections can be salvaged. If I recall correctly, you had some tighter curves in parts. The larger basement would allow you to do new ones with broader curves and gentler grades.

I want to add another voice to the "salvage some, redo others" answer. Think of it as your opportunity to add more and fix any past issues while using past work to bootstrap your new efforts.

I could not imagine dismantling the current Mt Sub without the next step being to move it.  Its one of the top 5 n scale layouts based on real mountain railroading challenges. Seeing those long trains crawl and snake there way up Cranberry grade is a sight.

Overall I look at it, as either sell it whole and start new, or calculate the effort it would take to do the house modifications to move it in, and compare it to the effort to start new and get it to the point where the current layout is now. I bet it would be far less effort to do the modifications, then it would be to build something and get it to where you have the current layout at.

The mountain sub, is finely back, stared  construction in February.   Decided to start over new,  but salvaging what I can from the old layout.  The new layout is going to focus more on just the cheat and cranberry grades.

Rowlesburg has to be one of my favorite spots to watch trains...head end dynamics screaming to hold the train back then the rear end power shoving for all it's worth...and the sounds of the horns echoing through the valley...especially on a cool, misty day.

Just think how great it was growing up there in the 50s and 60s.  Double track on Cheat River grade and triple on Cranberry.  I certainly enjoyed every minute of it.  Had lots of rides on helpers and local yard turn.

Ya man, awesome to see this come to life (again) The previous one was tremendous in duplicating the long steep grades of mt Appalachian RRing.

Then you are really going to love the new layout, we doubled the  length of the grades.
