PRR M1 on EBay

I'm contemplating bidding on this beast...
http://www.ebay.com/itm/281076372458?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
Seems like it could be a passable M1. Aside from all the small details, it needs a pilot and some cosmetic work at the steam pipes. Seems to me that the boiler should be "sectioned" between the smokebox and the sand dome and the rear part moved forward a foot or more. There also needs to be some alteration to length of the firebox.
Does it seem worth doing?

It also states that it runs rough and jerky and needs work. Up to you to decide whether you are able to turn it into a good runner. Just something to think about.
Best wishes, Dave

Honestly,
I think it needs an enormous amount of work to even begin to approach a PRR M1.
The frame and drivers are completely wrong for an M1. Those big 80" drivers will always look pretty bad
on an engine that was only supposed to have 72". The tender is really wrong, and the shape of a lot of the boiler, not just
the firebox, just look very very rough to me.
Add to that, the mention of it running jerky, and I worry that by modifying it, it has been buggered up in the gears.
My interest in an engine like this would be for spare parts. The Con-Cor/Kato S2 had some nice parts in it, so if you were going to
strip out the drivers and frame and make some kind of a big-drivered northern or something, it would make sense. But not for
an M1.

My gut reaction is that the seller is unloading something that is now beyond his ability to fix. Be careful what you may be walking into. It could be too far gone to salvage, especially for $62.00+ including shipping.

And... in the interest of 100% disclosure and honesty...
I actually am interested in that engine, but as I indicated previously, I am interested in it for the S2 salvagable parts,
not to try to complete or make a PRR M1 out of it. When I made my M1, the Rivarossi 4-6-2 was the only thing
that had drivers close to the right size. Since then, the Bachmann 4-8-2 came out and that still seems to me
to be the clearest path to making a decent M1 these days, like Dave Vollmer and other have done.

I actually am interested in that engine, I am interested in completing the M1 without taking to my much beloved Green S2.
I may just beat you to the front gate Max

And , again , it is not advisable to post here anything on eBay except the ridiculous . Doing so reduces the chances of buyers getting a lower bid , or even winning at all . Kind of like Russian roulette with only one chamber empty . A PM to a known interested party would be doing a friend a favor though .

This may have a happier ending than you think. I have no interest in the M1 parts and the others in here seem to want only the M1 parts.

I was going to make a joke about Al trying to rip you off with the AUS dollar being weaker... but it's not.
1.00 USD = 0.960984 AUD
I'll get you next time, Alwyn! Next time!

Here's a Clerihew about Ed. K.
Ed Kapucinski
Every night, he plants a new tree.
But mention his law
and you've pulled your last straw!
Alternate version:
Ed Kapucinski
Every night, he plants a new tree.
He asks excitedly "Did you say Ménage à Trois?"
No, I said "Ed's Law."

It was not all that long ago one US dollar would cost us nearly two Australian dollars. That would frighten the daylights out of you.
