Atlas/Kato RS-3

I recently picked up one of these engines; it runs just fine, but on closer inspection I see the traction tires are missing. I don't see this part listed on the Atlas site,(at least under the "RS3/Japan" category), so now I'm wondering if maybe the best plan of action would be to replace the wheel/axle sets with "plain" non-TT wheelsets.

Since that part is also not listed on the "RS3/Japan" page, will any wheel/axle set work?

Also, is it best to drop the trucks in order to replace these, or can I do it with the trucks still attached?

With the traction tire they'll pull great.
With out the tire they'll do about 12-15 cars on the flat.
But, IIRC, they have pizza cutter wheels.  Does anyone know if the newer wheels will fit in the axle gears.

A further check of the parts website shows the TT are available; thanks "Altoona".

Will the wheel sets made for the "China" locos also fit this Japanese engine?

The Atlas/China wheelsets will not fit the older Atlas/Kato trucks. A Warning before you start: The trucks are very easy to take apart. They are very difficult and can require a great deal of skill to put together. Don't take both trucks apart at the same time. A similar warning used to appear on the parts sheet and with good reason.

Yea, I read that on the parts sheet; that's good advise. Times like this I miss working in O scale!

Folks - please, contact the manufacturer on issues such as this.  If there is an Atlas part number assigned to the component, then it has been inventoried regardless of whether or not it appears on the Atlas e-commerce site.

This is the third fourth question of this type in the last four days, when all you have to do is check with the source.  This is a high-end modeling forum, not Ask.com.

Darn, I thought TRW was a place to show your handywork and ask for information about where to get or how to do something.

It just never dawned on me that it was just a place to show off your MMR certificate winners,but don't worry now that I know this I won't ask anymore questions from anybody on this forum,promise.

Oh please! I can relate to the way Bryan feels. I think that we all at some point just get tired of what we perceive as "stupid questions posted by lazy people who aren't even willing to do even the slightest amount of research before asking the forum for help".  I go through this on the Alps printer Yahoo forums from time to time. There is just so many times I can answer the same extremely simple question before I just can't take it anymore and I do something like Bryan is doing.

I learned the part number for the traction tire on an Atlas/Kato RS3.
I learned that the new model wheels don't fit the old model.
I learned the trucks are a bitch to assemble (already new that)

I learned not to post questions on this forum? This one is only for elite modelers.
