I like Ohio Fence, but in the 1940's wouldn't it be called Ohio lumberyard?  :tommann:

Chris -
Do you belong to the Erie Historical Society or Association?
I am sure there is a resource available for Industry names that the Erie served in all of the towns along it's length.
I have one issued by the Northern Pacific in 1968 that helps in these situations.
I can choose a name from an industry located in Minnesota along the NP, although I model a branch in SW Washington, so all of the town's are listed for prototypical reference.
It also is useful in showing team tracks and there users and reciprocal switching railroads too.

This layout isn't gonna be Erie. I was thinking of calling it the Mahoning Valley Railroad.

As for industries along the Erie where I live:

They didn't use wooden couplers then .
Iron fencing common . They could have gotten pre welded panels delivered by train , or raw iron to weld themselves .
Poles for rail and post style fences coming in by rail .
Barbed wire coming in by rail .
Misc hardware delivered in crates and barrels , by rail or truck .

Offices and display on the second floor .

Maybe an over track and adjacent to it small hoist to off load the iron .

Fork lift .

Trucks for delivery to job sites .

...Considering the apparent popularity of pickles on model railroads, pickle factories, pickle cars, pickle vats, pickle pussed railroad engineers,ETC,has anyone here ever actually SEEN any of these aforementioned facilities in real life? and do they,in fact, actually look like our models?[\quote]

I laid an asphalt parking lot at a pickle factory in Chicago one summer.  Believe me, it is a single-purpose plant.
I about died from the garlic and vinegar smell.

There was an article in RMC a few months ago about pickle factories, as part of their Vignettes series.
It didn't look anything like Chris' model.
Regards,
Paul

I can see this is headed for the Crew Lounge.

Especially with the suggestion of Goatse Fudge Company...
