Edit: I just had a thought DKS, why not call one of the served industries "White River (somethingorother)" and have the line as an industrial owned short line that just happens to offer some common carrier to neighbouring businesses? (which would explain the "Northern") maybe just ad "Industrial Services" after the name.

Not hard to place in reality given the existence of similar such lines over the border in NYC.


Actually, brain wave number 2: "White River Wholesale Foods" then you have any valid reason for boxcars of Maine spuds, Midwest canned goods or reefers of Western citrus etc.

Nope. Actually, think Jersey City. I'm toying with the idea of the Newport and Jersey City RR.

That describes me better than the layout.

Not sure yet. Toying with the idea of maybe the 40s.

Hmm... perhaps we are kindred spirits... (or more of I wish to walk within your footsteps)

I need to get cracking before you go and have all of your gatorfoam cut and glued.

All joking aside, Jersey City Terminal sounds pretty realistic. Or just calling it the Ironbound. But, I think naming it that might be a bit anachronistic, since the railroad would be the cause of the name, not the other way around.

But, I'm sure, that no matter what you name it, it's gonna be sick.

The 40s would be a cool time period, as would the 1980s. You could get away with not having sidings into everything in the 80s, and having plenty of abandoned stuff too. Plus, I've been wanting to see some good 80s urban modeling involving the true 80s urban vibe... (ie, murders and drug dealers).

Yes, I do have a penchant for abandoned stuff, and I really am torn between 40s and 70s-80s. I've even thought about a dual-era layout, with some replaceable structures representing active and abandoned states. The only thing that can't be swapped out, of course, is weedy, overgrown track. We'll see.

I like the dual-era concept.

As for swapping out the weedy, overgrown track, I think you could find a way to do that.  For example, mount the entire plot for the industry (including track, structure, and perhaps even the parking lot) on a piece of foamcore or Masonite that could "pop-out."  The track could be powered by feeders which have a quick-disconnect plug.  Build a cassette for each of the different eras.
