I may take a third course... choose a different setting. Much as I love the railroad's name, I'd like the name to fit the layout better, rather than force the layout to fit the name. We'll see...

Why not just model Reading, PA?  You can do Reading or PRR (or both) in any number of cool eras.

I'd stick with all 1940's, but that is just me 

Also I have a rolling lift bridge kit that I started. It looked like it needed some work to make it look more correct, but you can have it if you want.

And every layout needs a coal yard!  There is a spot in Youngstown that had 4-5 coal trestles all within a few blocks of each other. Most of the piers are still standing. Now that I have a few aerial photos from the 1950's I see coal yards everywhere.

Why not just follow MC's yard name and "Effet" to just get the look you want; Reading does sound like a neat place to model though, and one can't go wrong with the motive power

I may or may not change the name, but I'm not changing the layout. I thought about making it "Reading-like," but I'd run into similar quandaries as I have with JC, so it'll just be freelanced.

A plan like this almost necessitates being free-lanced.  You'll still nail it though.  I may have missed it, but are you still planning a dual-era pike?  That sounds really tough to pull off, especially for a traveling layout.
