Hi Guys,

We have an opening in the Graphics Department at MTL and I've attached the full posting to review.  I would really like to find someone who is active in the hobby to fill this position.

Looking forward to seeing some great applications.

I'll be checking in during the day for feedback.

Cheers

Joe

Now that would be a cool job (but I'm on the "right coast" and thankfully already have a decent job).  Besides, my "official" qualifications in graphic arts are a bit lacking (although I have plenty of experience).  :D I do hope that you will find a modeler to fill that position as that makes them so much better suited for this job.

[sigh] This would have been perfect seven years ago, when I was already on the West Coast and needed a job. 30 years of pre-press and typography experience would be boffo for you, not to mention 45 years in N. But, alas, I'm retired (...sort of...) now, and pretty firmly planted.

Good luck!

Hmm... do I qualify?
I like to fingerpaint...

Two scientists create a teleportation ray, and they try it out on a cricket. They put the cricket on one of the two teleportation pads in the room, and they turn the ray on.
The cricket jumps across the room onto the other pad.

Congratulations!
Micro-Trains is officially a 'job creator'.  Too bad I'm firmly anchored in Atlanta.  This could be interesting.

Hopefully this news can quiet the 'hobby is dying' doomsayers...

My daughter's finishing up here GA degree here at the local college, just another year....
Of course then, the fantasy lines would start having dragons on them.
With the Hobbit due out soon, you could do a series of mythical creatures on stock cars.

Great to hear.  Would love a job in the model train world.  In graphics, I only use Vectorworks, which I did see was used by LGB in producing their freight car molds.  Not so familiar with Adobe stuff.  Drat.

One thing not noted in the posting - how open is MT to, ahhh, suggestions on the next project?  This crowd would have a hard time just drawing and not suggesting!

One wonders, in this day & age, with instant comms via phone & internet, why you'd actually need to have this person work in your offices?
Or whether it would, in fact, need to be one individual.
Or, full-time?

Just defining the opportunity here.
I am color-blind, and graphic arts is beyond my capabilities.  :D

Essential Job Duties:
1. Produce to-scale detailed computer-generated artwork of railroad cars and locomotives and output to film for use in the decorating department.
2. Conduct research to support artwork using in-house and online resources and industry contacts to ensure accuracy of the artwork and supporting information.
3. Compose written technical copy on car history and product description for use in various materials.
4. Must be able to work with film and related equipment such as Film Image Setter and Developer.
5. Work directly with the Marketing Director with new product artwork and packaging materials.
6. Periodically must lift and transport supplies weighing between 10- 20 lbs.
7. Must realize that Chessie System covered hoppers were blue and yellow.  There were never any black and yellow ones, and there never will be.

Fixed it for you. ;)

But seriously, this looks really tempting and would fit me rather well, except that I've only used Corel Draw for my artwork, have a degree in music/biomedical sciences/chemistry and I live on the gulf coast.  Ah, oh well.  But if you ever need someone on a per-project basis...

I'm sure there are jobs available at gas stations in Oregon.
Or you could just fill up in California.

Best wishes, Dave
If you lend someone $20, and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

PAL Houston,

Probably not.  I work in DFW, and have my draftsmen in Austin and St Paul, MN.  With sites like dropbox.com we trade files within minutes.

I think the biggest value in working right there at MT world HQ would be the ability to breath in all that factory air, which must be good, because its so expensive..... :D
