So, what do you think?

Eric is sending me some samples to try on my Gooderham 2200 coaches. Are there any other cars that these would be appropriate for?

Thanks,
-Mark

I think those need some paint pronto to fully reveal their hawtness!

Without a detailed check I would say these would also be used on the "Grove" 10-6 sleepers and perhaps the 81' baggage express and RPO but I'll have to check. (Geoff makes these as well)

I don't actually have them yet, that's just a picture Eric sent me.

Mark:

The truck looks promising - thank you for the peek.

Any idea when these will be available and how?

I believe Pud is correct - these would be good for the coaches, baggage, express-RPO and sleepers.

If you have any questions for Eric, his email addy is panamintmodels@aol.com

Once Eric settles on pricing they should be available from his shapeways store -

http://www.shapeways.com/shops/panamintmodels

Or you can just contact him directly - panamintmodels@aol.com

Mark:

I shared your photo of hte truck model with Geoff Gooderham and asked him about the trucks and what cars they would be suitable for.  Here is his reply:

The trucks are incredible. I'll need a fleet, and maybe we should include them in my kits. They'd be correct for the baggage, mail & express, and the sleeper. Now, the coach needs a slightly different version...

The coach truck had a dampening strut in place of the prominent leaf spring, and if I remember correctly, a different arrangement for the brake cylinders (less of a projection toward the car centre).

The prototypew photograph I shared with you was underneath a mail express car so if that was your manufacturer's primary reference, that will explain why his model is suitaable for the mail express, baggage and sleeper.  It should not be too much work to modify the existing model to be correct for the coaches.  With all of Geoff's kits out there, both versions of hte truck are needed.

If these are from Shapeways, I will be concerned as to quality of printing.  The models I have ordered from them so far have proved to be unuseable.

Tim, the first picture I posted actually shows the truck under an ex-CP 2200 coach (currently DM&E) -

Your photo from BCOL 6506 looks pretty much the same to me, but I guess I'm missing something? Can you point out the differences?

What problems have you had with shapeways models? The trucks Eric sent to me look great, are quite sturdy, and performed well underneath my Gooderham coach (relatively free-rolling, no derailments, etc).

I think maybe we need to get Geoff and Eric talking to each other. Can you forward Eric's email addy to Geoff?

Thanks,
-Mark

Ok; what we have here appears to be a truck from the original 2100 series coaches and the sleepers, express, etc on a 2200 series coach. here's a pic of the older 2100 series coach....

This is a match for the truck Spook has done... here's a pair of 2200's on the dead line... not the truck difference....

You can see the dampening strut in the middle of the truck.....as Tim said, not hard to modify the design and offer both trucks...I'm in for a bunch.

Interesting, apparently the cars I want to model are 2200's with (for whatever reason) 2100 trucks. So, the truck that Eric has made will work just fine  for what I want to do -

Anybody have any good close-up pictures of an actual 2200 truck? I'm sure Eric would do that one too if he can.

Here's some information Eric culled from an article about CP trucks. The truck he's been working on is a "1b", but it sounds like he's going to be doing the 2a and 2b variants as well.

Type 1a trucks 1936-40 -
1700
2100-2128
3050-3053
3600-3618
4200-4201
6630

Type 1b (on Shapeways now) 1940-54 -
2129-2178
2200-2234
3619-3648
3745-3749
4202-4256
4560-4565
4700-4789
14102 Ash Grove
14107 Elm Grove (replaced with type 2b)
14108 Fir Grove
14110 Oak Grove
14115 Pine Grove

Type 2a (horizontal struts instead of spring) 1948-50 -
2235-2298 earlier half of these cars (it's possible they all had this type as built)

Type 2b (horizontal struts but with a thick vertical strut in center) -
2235-2298 later half or so had these, possibly as original, some early cars as replacements, but it's a jumble.
14101 Apple Grove
14103 Balsam Grove
14104 Beech Grove
14105 Birch Grove
14106 Cedar Grove
14109 Maple Grove
14111 Olive Grove
14112 Orange Grove
14113 Palm Grove
14114 Peach Grove
14116 Poplar Grove
14117 Spruce Grove
14118 Walnut Grove
14119 Willow Grove

Type 3 (an 8 foot truck for commuter coaches) -
800-839

Note there were at least four types of journals used, often two kinds per truck.
