Thanks, bc6.  Please follow along and offer suggestions and constructive criticism to assist me in building my layout.

Unfortunately, progress is about to come to a screeching halt.  I need to buy cork roadbed and track to start transferring the plan to the layout.  Atlas Code 55 turnouts are in short supply right now, although I will admit I haven't done a great amount of searching online yet.  I really only need one right hand and one left hand #5 turnout (which I would photocopy) to draw the track plan on the layout.

I did add the strips of wood to the command station shelf, so that task is complete.  I found some 5/8" x 5/8" strip in the garage and glued a piece along the front and the rear of the shelf to keep things from falling to the floor.

That reminds me.  Since I won't likely be running trains for some time, I really ought to send my DT400 throttle back to Digitrax to fix the capacitor issue and get upgrades.  For now, a 9V battery has been the temporary solution to the defective capacitor problem.

Thanks!  Also, your post confirms my decision to upgrade to the DT402D.  I emailed Digitrax earlier today, and I literally just received a response, confirming that I need to spend $65.00 for the upgrade and $25.00 to fix the dying capacitor issue.  :RUEffinKiddingMe:  I was hoping that the upgrade would make the capacitor issue moot and it would only cost me $65.00.  Oh, well.  The throttle will be on its way to Digitrax in the near future. This will make operations on my layout and yours sooooooooo much better.  Now, if we can get Lee to follow through with his conversion to Digitrax.

Spent a good part of today installing cork roadbed.  I've got most of that task finished and just need to finish the yard in Aberdeen.  I also experimented with cookie-cutter foam subroadbed (this should make Ed proud!).  As you can see, I cut the foam to create the incline on the A&R from Aberdeen up Bethesda Hill.  I modified the plan to curve this track off the side of the layout for future expansion.

Here's some pics.  Note that nothing (other than the cork roadbed) is glued down, so I will tweak the grade before gluing the foam to the HCD:

Here's Southern Pines, NC.  You may notice that I strayed from my plan here (e.g., the sidings).  When playing with the track pieces in 1:1, I altered the design to fit the area better.  I have confirmed that the passing siding will hold one locomotive, six 50' cars, and a caboose.  I would prefer a ten-car train, but, hey, this is a small layout:

A closer shot of the A&R climbing to its overpass over the SBD and of the genesis of the lake.  I have a lot of foam carving to do, and I haven't even roughed in the ridge yet:

Another overall picture:

How badly do you need the atlas track?

http://www.trainworld.com.au/contacts.php

They're in the process of moving but I'm pretty sure the #5's and #7's you need are in stock as I was digging through a box of it today looking for the Peco unit I'm after, yes they are down under but if you email and ask nicely I'm sure they'll ship to the U.S.

I think I'm okay on track.  I bought everything I needed at MBK this weekend, except for four turnouts.  However, turnouts just became available on the Trading Post, so that should take care of that problem.

Thanks,
