You're definitely nailing the Southeastern kudzu look.

As for the pines, I think one fellow over on nscale.org had used the part of the crepe myrtle tree which holds the flowers; you just have to get it after the seeds have dispersed.

Dave, as another transplanted southerner - who needs to model a patch of this stuff - you have officially nailed it.  Job well done.  Now go hang some light blue vinyl flashing over those cinder blocks in the distance and you.ll have a backdrop.

WAIT - befor eyou do that post the product numbers of your polyfibre and leaf flock so I can do my kudzu.

Philip,

I'll get those numbers off of the packages tonight.  Believe me, I need to document that information anyway, so I don't have to figure this out again.  Can you imagine the brain overload of a colorblind guy standing at the Scenic Express tables at Timonium trying to figure out the right materials and color?   #1.  I also have about $30.00 of materials that I cannot use for kudzu.   #2.

That's Railway Models from Edgewood, MD. He has a sheetload of brick sheets...believe he may have a website as well.

Dave, Kudzu gets darker leaves further into the patch, so adding a darker shading away from the edges would help.

Also, there was a dealer to the left in the center room as you looked at Tex N Rails who had nice N scale sheet brick, and black styrene sheets too. I left some. Sorry our paths didn't cross during the day like mine did with Ed.

Kudzu materials:

Woodland Scenics Poly Fiber "Green" #FP178.  I bought two 16g (0.56 oz. bags) at MBK for $2.99 per bag, but I haven't even used a third of a bag yet.

Scenic Express Super Leaf Scale Leaves "Spring Green."  I bought one 24 oz. ECO-Pack from Scenic Express at the show for $9.99, and I have only used probably one-half of the package.

Fortunately, these materials go a long way.  As compared to the cost of the Silflor horsetail foliage material, which would give a similar look, we're thankfully talking pennies per square foot, rather than dollars.

Hope this helps,

This is a very nice little layout.  The way you have been defining your scenes and the way you photograph it makes it look much larger.  I've been reading along carefully and although I can't say I know what kudzu is or ever seen it in real life, it looks good to me.  Also, I especially like the new tracks in the engine facility and looking forward to the shed.

Nice job Dave and keep it up!

Astonishing.  Very well played.  All you have to do now is make a couple of trees every night...

For a photo backdrop, just go to Staples and get a sheet of foam core board in white.  If you're so compelled, add some washes of blue to it, or laminate some sky blue poster board to it.  I think they even have a sheet of poster board with clouds printed, but I think it's oriented vertically, so it's harder to get a wide angle on.  I kept a small piece of styrene sheet that I dolled up for temporary photo backgrounds...

Even now, it serves me well...

Thanks, Lee.  Heh, if I make a couple of trees per night (I sincerely doubt that I could keep that pace), it will probably only take several months to build all the trees I'll need.

Great idea on the backdrop.  Glad I thought of it.  ;)

I think some folks expressed concerned that what I had in mind for the A&R's enginehouse wouldn't fit on my layout.  So, tonight, I cut up a cereal box to mock up a new enginehouse that at least somewhat resembles the prototype.  I really just want the building to fit my space and hold two four-axle units under roof on each track.  I am not concerned about making an exact scale replica, so the dimensions of this mock-up are close enough for me:

The A&R fleet likes it enough, that they've moved in already:

Even though it's just raw cardboard, I like it much better than the steel building.  One of these days I'll get around to building the actual enginehouse out of styrene.  Last weekend, I found some styrene at MBK that looks like corrugated metal, but I still need to find a source for brick sheet.  Until then, this is a decent stand-in.

For reference, here's the prototype A&R enginehouse in Aberdeen, North Carolina:
