Here's the link for the PDF of the tinted file if you want to see how it compares when printed.

Jason,

I like that result a lot.  We'll have to wait until I can get some decal paper to see how it works out on the model, i.e., whether I should use a light gray or a dark gray primer under that decal.

Thanks again,
DFF

Why not just print it out on matte photo paper and glue it on?

This...Except either a decal or a photo will not have a 3D texture..While YMMV, I think this depot is coming out so nice, it deserves a 3D solution....

Also, this is probably worth a mention, though I'm not sure about the sizing(N?HO?..it's been a while),.... I have seen folks make their own diamond shingles using "pinking" shears, the scissors that cut a zig-zag pattern...Available in the fabric section of waldo world or some such place...

I am envious of how well everything fits together on this scratchbuild depot!...Better than some kits I've seen!..Nice job..

Why not just print it out on gray  paper  and apply it with spray mount ?  Apply cap shingles along the hips and ridges.

My layout is in a basement, and, although it's a dry basement, it can get humid down there.  I'm worried about how the paper would hold up, not to mention getting it to lay flat when gluing it in place.  Decals solve these problems and can be buried under a layer of clear to seal it.

@wcfn100,

I printed the revised roofing tiles this morning at the office.  I like it.  We'll just have to test it over different color backgrounds, although, since the roof is so dark on the prototype, I think the dark gray primer is probably best.  Since I'm colorblind, there's no need (or ability!) for me to be overly picky.  :)

Oh, and I finally remembered to order the decal paper for laser printers and copy machines from MicroMark this morning.  :P

I just figured out how to do the ridge caps, and I think it'll look okay.  If I cut the shingles along those shadow lines (i.e., diagonally), I can get a long strip of square tiles that should make reasonable looking ridge caps and the variation in color will match the shingles.  Easy peasy!

That's actually how they're done in 1:1 scale... :D

Agreed, but I was scratching my head around how to do those caps, because I can't use diamond shaped caps.  Figuring out that I can cut the sheet diagonally, creating square shingles, solved that problem.  Now, I don't have to inconvenience anyone to draw up caps that match the roof shingles for color and texture.   :)

I'm very pleased how this project is coming together.  I still have to finish the brickwork on the first floor (the walls not visible in the following picture), which requires more window and door fitting:

Dave, It figures I go on vacation and miss all the good stuff. The Station looks fantastic. Can't wait to see it painted and the shingles applied to the roof.

Well, I hope you had a great vacation!  You didn't miss much, and we're always here when you return.  ;)

Thanks!

Well, here's the result of the first test print.  This is only on copy paper, so please ignore the sheen, the poor trimming, and the not-so-great fitment between the pieces:

Here's the prototype for comparison:

I think, for now, it's too light, but please note that the decal will be laid down over a primer gray, which will probably darken the color immensely.  If not, I actually like the lighter roof color better than the drab prototype's.  The tiles scale out to about 18" width, which I thought would be too big, but looking the prototype picture, they actually might be close.

Thoughts?

I asked this question before, but the post got buried in between other conversations and no one responded.  So, I'll ask again, reminding you that I am red-green colorblind.

What color do you all see for the brick and the trim in the photo photo in the previous post by @chicken45?  There's no way that I'll be able to do the fancy paintwork on the bricks around those windows and doors, because my "bricks" are way oversized and do not line up as nice as the prototype's.  I'll cheat and just paint the windows and doors that trim color.

To me, the bricks look white and the trim is red.  Correct?  What shade of red?

Thanks,
DFF
