Dave, I tried to scale the tiles and put it into a PDF.  Trry this link and let me know how it works.

Jason,

That looks nice.  There's a little repetition to the tile pattern, but, because the roof on the model is broken up, I can hide that.  I'll try to do a sample print tomorrow at the office and see how the scaling works out.  Thanks so much for your help!

I guess I figured we'd wait to see how it looks and fits.  If the pattern is really visible, the file can be adjusted.

Even though I had adjusted the orginal file by stretching it vertically (since the picture was taken of a pitched roof), I'm assuming it will need more.  We can easily adjust that once you place it on the model.

edit: one more thing, the color can be adjusted a bit too if needed.

@wcfn100,

Ooh, the test print looks promising.  Again, I think the model is small enough and the roof sections are broken up enough that the slight repetition won't be a problem.  Of course, I don't have a scale ruler at work, so I'll take this home and mess with it later.  As far as color, it looks fine to me, but then, again, I'm colorblind.

I guess I need to buy some decal paper.  Will that work in a color laser printer?  Or do I need to use an ink jet printer?

Micromark sells decalmpaper for both inkjet and laser. I've only ever used the ink jet stuff but it works well. I assume the laser printer stuff will as well.

Thanks, Philip!  I'll go look that up.

Watching with much interest because I never liked the thickness of paper or sandpaper, or even mylar-backed sandpaper for a shingle material that in 1:1 scale is less than 1/8" thick (.0007" in N scale).  When you test, please post macro images if you could.

My only other concern is the ridge seams, a strip decal over the corner might work, just like the real thing.

Thanks!  Will do.

That's what I'm thinking, too.  I'm taking real care with the joints between the different styrene roof pieces, to allow the decals to meet and then support the ridge caps to hide those decal seams.  In fact, the first joint has a small spot that a little putty will take care of, but the second seam (I installed a third roof piece this week) came out really nice and no putty is necessary.  I still have to put on the last main roof section, which is complicated by that dormer.  Then, of course the dormer roof needs to be built.  I'm gaining on it, though.

Well, here's the result of the first test print.  This is only on copy paper, so please ignore the sheen, the poor trimming, and the not-so-great fitment between the pieces:

Here's the prototype for comparison:

I think, for now, it's too light, but please note that the decal will be laid down over a primer gray, which will probably darken the color immensely.  If not, I actually like the lighter roof color better than the drab prototype's.  The tiles scale out to about 18" width, which I thought would be too big, but looking the prototype picture, they actually might be close.

Thoughts?

That looks pretty good.  I can play with the color this weekend and see if I can't get something with more brown and rust and not so black and white.

DUDE!  Holy cow, I did it!  The main roof is finished.  On to the dormer, which will be complicated, but shouldn't be as bad as the tolerances required to fit the front roof piece around the dormer.

Here's an idea of how the image can be 'tinted'.

We can make multiple different colors and see what looks best.

Awesome, Jason!  And now, I'm almost ready for the decals.  First, I got the "rafters" built for the dormer, and . . .

The trick, she is done!

I'm very pleased how this project is coming together.  I still have to finish the brickwork on the first floor (the walls not visible in the following picture), which requires more window and door fitting:

I would consider painting the roof (under the decals) with mixed brown and gray patches rather than adding color to the printout for the decal in order to best match the roof in the photo. It depends on your printer, but when I've printed decals out in color laser, the color dots for shading were on the course side. If you're printing with an inkjet, it might be better, but inkjet decals come with their own problems. The station is looking nice, though!
