Seriously Dave, I think your bridge would be a great article for N Scale Magazine.  I would think our own Lee Weldon and Tim Horton would be able to answer article questions? Take lots of pictures and find out from Lee or Tim what format is needed for the photos.

If you need some inspiration/reference, here's a fertilizer dealership in my hometown; it's pretty seasonal, but I've seen BN hoppers and CN Cylindrical hoppers parked on the spur.

Considering that CN owns the former IC/ICG/GM&O I don't find it curious at all.

And Dave, do the article. That sort of bridge is semi- iconic on secondary roads down south.

I am as well; the BN ones may have been patched leasers, although I'm 95% sure the CN one was definitely CN. One major thing to note about the fertilizer industry, is that it is a seasonal business; I've only seen that industry receiving hoppers during the spring. I'm not sure on the exact time frame, but I know that in the fall/winter, it's pretty much deserted.

I appreciate the information regarding the fertilizer business being seasonal.  While it seems somewhat obvious in retrospect, I wouldn't have considered that.  However, this means I just need to model springtime, which is okay with me.  @Ed Kapuscinski's got winter covered, and others, like David Popp model autumn.  So, I had been thinking of modeling the hazy, hot summer months.  But, I do like the brighter greens of spring, and I was accused of my kudzu being too light of a green, so . . .  spring it will be!  Modeling flowering plants will be cool.

Because I'm out of paint, which has brought another project to a standstill, I finally started building the replacement for the cardboard stand-in A&R enginehouse.  Can you believe it?!  It's only been a few years. 



What really kept this project from moving forward was my procrastination of the foundation and concrete pad in the "extension" that had to be built flush with the original concrete pad in the main portion of the enginehouse.  It also had to be cut around the rails to maintain the proper flangeways.  But, that part's finished, and I have the main walls rough cut.  I'll need to do some tweaking to the wall pieces before I laminate the brick veneer and the corrugated siding.  This is why there's only masking tape holding the structure together for now.

I've got the corrugated steel "addition" to the enginehouse finished (sans paint and weathering).  After I stepped back and looked at the mocked up structure last night, it seemed too massive.  When I began putting windows and doors on the building they appeared too small.  So, I checked photos of the prototype this morning, and it was obvious that the overall height of the building was too tall.  This occurred because I had used an N scale Pikestuff enginehouse for reference.  The prototype A&R enginehouse is not that tall.  I cut the walls down, and the proportions seem much better to me.  Remember, though, I am not building a scale model; I'm building a structure to fit my space.



I must add that the Plastruct corrugated sheet siding worked out better than I had anticipated.  The corners didn't have huge gaps, and the curved roof didn't put up too much of a fight being glued into place.

Looking at the google pix .. the engine house doors appear to be no more than the a foot above the top of the loco .. also, the roll door on the side of the building needs to be sightly taller .. for the color -- there is a steel colored spray paint at wal mart .. which, if you weather it will look really good ..

Yeah, I know.  I'm not even trying to build a scale model.  I just want to fit the space I have to model and am using doors and windows that are available in N scale.  I'm okay with that.  99% of the population wouldn't see the difference without a photo for reference.

I'll need help on the paint colors.  What you may not realize is that there are translucent panels in the corrugated roof.  I need to figure out their color, too.  Check out this view from inside the prototype to see what I'm describing:

since you don't have clear corrugated .. I would use the steel spray paint for the majority of the roof, but mask of the "translucent" areas and leave those white .. pix on the net show various -- clear, blue, white panels ..
